DISCUSS WHAT WENT WRONG WITH California Electricity Markets: What Went Wrong? Where Do We Go From Here? is the topic of talk to be given by energy expert Severin Borenstein April 11 in the Faculty Club at the University of California San Diego. The 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting is the second in this year's UCSD Economics Roundtable series designed as a forum for local business professionals and community leaders to exchange ideas and information with experts in economics, finance, business, and public policy. Borenstein is director of the University of California Energy Institute and the E.T. Grether Professor of Business Administration and Public Policy at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. He serves on the Board of Governors of the California Power Exchange and on the California Attorney General's Gasoline Price Task Force. Borenstein's recent published articles include Electricity Restructuring: Deregulation or Reregulation? in Regulation; California Consumers Haven't Seen Benefits of Deregulating the Electrical Industry Yet - What Went Wrong? in the San Jose Mercury News, and Electricity Pricing Should Clue Consumers to Judicious Use in the Los Angeles Times. A working paper is The Trouble with Electricity Markets (and Some Solutions). Borenstein received a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been director of the UC Energy Institute since 1994 and a professor at UC Berkeley since 1996. The roundtable is $50 per person and includes a continental breakfast and parking.
