More than 3,000 students attended the Career Services Center's Triton Fall Job & Internship Fair.

University of California, San Diego’s Career Services is sponsoring a “Job Search Stimulus Package” for graduating seniors facing an uncertain job market. This spring, the center will host more than 20 career workshops and new programs to help students target industries and geographic locations with more job opportunities.

The workshops come as a survey of UC San Diego’s 2008 graduates revealed strong job placement and graduate school admissions. Of the 884 responding to the survey:

  • About 62 percent were employed in career positions.
  • Thirty-eight percent were enrolled in graduate or professional school.
  • The average annual starting salary for those employed was $43,400, matching the previous year’s record high.
  • Twenty-eight percent are working in technology; 24 percent in business; 22 percent in human services; 19 percent in life health sciences; and 7 percent in arts and communications.
  • Among those pursuing advanced degrees immediately after graduation, one-quarter entered programs for health professions.

Several companies attend the Career Services Center's Job and Internship Fairs every quarter to recruit students.

“UC San Diego is here to support students facing these tough economic times,” said Craig Schmidt, associate director of the Career Services Center. “UC San Diego’s most recent graduates were successful securing employment. With that in mind, the Career Services Center has created the most up-to-date job search, resume, interview, and networking programs and services specifically designed to help this year’s graduating class thrive in a tough economy.”

The “Job Search Stimulus Package” will feature a quarter-long series of events to help students build their resumes, prepare for job interviews and network with alumni.
