Chancellor Fox has joined us. Thank you for spending an hour with us today. |
| MA_Fox> |
I am delighted to participate today. I always welcome opportunities to get to know and interact with students and everyone in the campus community |
| Lisa: |
Why did you decide to come to UCSD? |
| MA_Fox> |
for some of the same reasons you chose to enroll here: UCSD has a global reputation for excellence; because the best people in every field are teaching and studying here; and because UCSD is one of the most beautiful in the country |
| Sophia: |
What political affiliation are you? |
| MA_Fox> |
as chancellor, I must remain non-partisan. I am pleased that I have had the opportunity to work with President George W. Bush when he was Gov of Texas and with John Edwards, who is an alumnus of North Carolina State. I believe every citizen should vote and I am registered to vote in CA |
| Sophia: |
Do you pay for your own parking on campus? |
| MA_Fox> |
Yes, I pay for my own parking space |
| Alex: |
What do you like most about being chancellor? |
| MA_Fox> |
That's easy. interacting with students. I had a great time welcoming students to campus during move-in on Sept. 19. knowing that each has a huge personal potential that our university will help them realize was a reminder of why I took this job. educating students is my priority and improving the quality of life for students will be a focus of my administration
| Sam: |
Have you set priorities for your administration? |
| MA_Fox> |
in my second week as chancellor, we held a retreat for acad and admin leaders and we identified several priorities. these are increasing UCSD's focus on its three pillars of strength: innovation, interdisciplinary scholarship, and international collaboration and opporunity. we also plan to focus on improving undergrad education and student life; venues for partnerships with the private sector; and improving UCSD's diversity; increasing private support...and seeking new venues for partnerships with the private sector; and improving our campus business practices so that UCSD will be a model of efficiency and accountability |

| MA_Fox> |
thanks. I'm happy to be here |
| linda_stewart: |
hello |
| MA_Fox> |
Hello, Linda |
| Sophia: |
What do you do to relax after a stressful day at the office? |
| MA_Fox> |
i go home...sometimes it is very late so i go home and go to bed |
| Sophia: |
Is this campus what you thought it would be? If not, why? |
| MA_Fox> |
it's even more than I thought it would be |
| Nam_Bui: |
what do you like most about our illustrious AS President Jenn Pae? |
| MA_Fox> |
she's very effective in representing student views to the administration. |
| Nam_Bui: |
Are you still going to hold office hours? |
| MA_Fox> |
Yes, I am working to initiate office hours, and I want to make it easy for students to sign up online. |
| Jaimie: |
How many kids do you have? What do they do? |
| MA_Fox> |
3 sons, 2 stepson, and 2 grandsons. Two sons are engineers, one is a pharmacist, and one is in medical school in Houston and 1 is a chef. the grandsons are younger than 2....and haven't yet chosen a career
| Kahli: |
Would you ever consider learning to surf? |
| MA_Fox> |
Yes, didn't you see me on a skateboard in the Guardian? |
| Helen: |
Chancellor Fox...Though you are new here, what has been your most rewarding experience so far? |
| MA_Fox> |
welcoming back students to campus.
| MA_Fox> |
participate in undergraduate research and community service, interact with alumni and graduate in four years. in my opinion, we already are one of the top three or four universities in the country. sometimes reputation lags reality. |
| Sophia: |
Good answer on the surfing! |
| Jaimie: |
What is your favorite sport to play? |
| MA_Fox> |
I golf, although not very well, but I enjoy the opportunity to be outside. I used to swim a mile a day before I became chancellor. |
| DJ: |
How do you feel about the coops? Why does the university want to shut them down? |
| MA_Fox> |
the co-ops provide a valuable educational, student development, and co-curricular experience, as well as providing service to the campus community. we are hopeful that we can reach mutually agreeable terms to allow these student-run businesses to continue to operate on our campus
| Nam_Bui: |
Since Pres Dynes appointed you to this position, will you be able to represent the goals of UCSD above and even if it stands opposed to the UC wide goals? |
| MA_Fox> |
Almost always the goals of UCSD will correspond with the goals of the University system. Every month I have an opportunity to attend the Council of Chancellors so I take that opportunity to make President Dynes and the other chancellors aware of the unique challenges and opportunities that we face at UCSD |
| Nam_Bui: |
Have you had any negative backlash as the Chancellor so far? |
| MA_Fox> |
No, it's a great job and the entire SD community has warmly welcomed me |
| DJ: |
We are a young campus that hasn't really built up its alumni base. How will you get students to want to stay involved when they graduate? |
| MA_Fox> |
We want our graduates to give back to the UCSD community by participating in intellectual and cultural events. We hope that they will also mentor current students, help them locate jobs and internships, and will support financially UCSD programs and scholarships |

are there any plans to improve school parking in the near future? |
| MA_Fox> |
parking is a constant challenge, but UCSD provides a number of services to improve transportation around campus, including providing the campus shuttle, which is a free campus service; the City Shuttle, which connects the campus with off-campus housing; a free bus zone sticker; and car pools. We also added 1000 new spaces to the Regents lot. |
| Shalene: |
Type here I'm a student of color and I've heard the Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) is going to be cut. I want to know why? |
| MA_Fox> |
outreach is very important to the university. as one activity supportive of our goal of diversity and inclusion, we were pleased that the draconian cuts proposed last spring were reduced by almost 90 % but the reality is that such programs cannot be fully funded at this time. we will be looking for private sector support to enhance these and other outreach programs |
| beer.belly: |
How do you expect me to get down to TJ without the Triton taxi? |
| MA_Fox> |
AS has created a safe ride program. contact your student government about the program
| melisa: |
yeah, but most of the spaces, on campus are b spaces or a spaces, that we can't really park until late evening... |
| Helen: |
Your office is located in a former Military barrack. Are there any plans to rebuild the Chancellor's Complex? |
| MA_Fox> |
There are no plans at the present to rebuild the Chancellor's Complex |
| jay: |
You spent many years at the great University of Texas. How would you compare the pros and cons of UT with the advantages and disadvantages of UCSD? |
| MA_Fox> |
Texas has 50,000 students and has no college system to create the intimate small community experience within a public research university. Like UCSD, it is an excellent university |
| dimka: |
hello |
| jay: |
Are you going to have time to do some of your chemistry research? |
| MA_Fox> |
while I have had to cut back the size of my research group because of time commitments as your chancellor, I very much value the importance of maintaining scholarship during an administrative appt. I anticipate working with 2 post doc fellows as soon as my laboratory here is ready for them

Will a transcript of this chat be available later? |
| MA_Fox> |
it will be posted tomorrow at http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu |
| Rick: |
Is there anything we as students can do to help? |
| MA_Fox> |
yes. please continue to participate in this type of open dialogue with me. I welcome your thoughts and insights into how we can make UCSD the best place possible for all of us to work and learn. Feel free to email me at chancellor@ucsd.edu. |
| UCSD_Moderator> |
Chancellor Fox, I am afraid we are about out of time. Thank you so much for joining us today. |
| MA_Fox> |
It's been fun. I'm sorry I couldn't answer all of the questions. Thank you to all of the students who took time to chat with me today |
