| Web Chat with Chancellor Fox |
Chancellor Marye Anne Fox held an hour-long Web chat with students at UCSD on March 8th. The following is a transcript of the chat. |
mafox> |
Good morning, and welcome to my "Chancellor's chat." I am eager to hear from you and respond to questions you may have. |

Hello Chancellor |
mafox> |
hello |
carmel: |
What can the university do to make sure teaching remains a priority in an era of budget cuts at the state level, which in turn require professors to spend a lot of time writing grants to finance their research? |
mafox> |
ensuring access is a priority for the UC system and we're pleased with Gov budget to uphold the compact |
Enrique: |
Hello Chancellor Fox, Thank you for opening this opportunity to talk to students about issues going on at UCSD. I'm sure you have heard about the issue regarding OASIS and the impact that the cuts will have on students starting next quarter. I was wondering if there is anything that is being done from the Chancellor's office to address the issue and how is it being insured that students will be able to have the many resources that OASIS has been able to offer students |
mafox> |
I understand the importance of OASIS to our campus and students. Outside our offices, we have seen many students the past 2 days. |
mafox> |
Regarding funding, Vice Chancellor Watson tells me that a budget adjustment of approximately $46,000 is being made within the Student Educational Advancement (SEA) cluster, which includes OASIS. Because Student Affairs and Student Services at UCSD and throughout the UC system were assessed such a massive budget reduction - over $4 million at UCSD in 2003-04 alone - many services continue to be funded at less than optimal levels. |
mafox> |
To meet the reduced budget level for Student Affairs, all departments were assessed at least 10% reductions, including OASIS. Several departments were assessed much larger reductions-20-30%-but OASIS was at least protected from these higher cuts. |
ucsd_muiron: |
chancellor, I know that you have heard much about the OASIS budget concerns from students. What are you going to do to ensure that students not in lower division sequences get the help they need? |
mafox> |
I understand your concern and, faced with these budget challenges, we will need to work together to find creative solutions. so I hope that you will discuss with us the optimum delivery of services to students throughout ucsd |
Socem: |
How do you view the future of sports clubs at UCSD? This is a program that many students are involved in and represent UCSD on the national stage. Many sports clubs teams compete against fully funded varsity programs at other schools. What is the future of funding and support to sports clubs? Would you support a fee referendum towards sports clubs? |
mafox> |
UCSD was founded with the view that our students would have an opportunity to participate in programs that ensure a healthy lifestyle. We would like to see the students' input about their overall interest in the athletics programs. |
art: |
I, as the majority of UCSD students have, came here with the hopes of obtaining the best academic education possible. Why are so many funds being allocated towards ATHLETIC programs and thus reducing the academic services offered .. i mean come on .. us tritons are no match for the bruins or the trojans so why not focus on what is crucial to student advancement at this campus? |
mafox> |
here we have another perspective about athletics |
ssaneine: |
Hi. It looks to me like fee increases are inevitable. How can UCSD in particular make sure that these increases don't overwhelm our most burdened students, particularly CA residents in financial need? |
mafox> |
our capital campaign includes support for student scholarships. this is vitally important to ensure access for our students. this morning, at a Rotary breakfast, I spoke of avenues for the community to help us with this goal. |
cortez: |
Chancellor, do you have a response to my comment? |
mafox> |
please see my remark about the capital campaign. I am eager to help to raise funds for student services. |
a3white: |
i meaned ignored |
mafox> |
I am working to answer as many questions as I can thoughtfully and substantively. ...with correct grammar and spelling :) |
cdeis: |
Did you ever recieve academic support throughout your undergraduate education? Did you ever take OCHEM? How did you get through it? |
mafox> |
of course, I took organic chem. I understand how difficult it is. I worked with my peers...other students and I were in study groups |
Alan: |
Why is it that our athletic program is 275,000 dollars in debt, but MILLIONS of dollars went undisclosed to top personnel? |
mafox> |
A number of factors contributed to the department's approximate $275,000 loss during the fiscal 2004-2005 fiscal year. Foremost were the increased expenses necessary in moving from NCAA Division III to Division II. Additional financial strains lie in NCAA and California Collegiate Athletic Association requirements, budget reductions, lack of inflation adjustments and slower than anticipated growth in revenue. We are working to avoid budget reductions that would adversely affect athletes or program competitiveness in the next fiscal year. |
mafox> |
The University has found that higher salaries are needed to recruit and retain the best teachers, researchers and leaders. In a complex organization such as UC, the proven ability to lead is a valuable commodity that should be compensated. |
D2Davis: |
Chancellor Fox I am a first year here at UCSD and after attending this university for approximatly 2 quarters i find that the administration is in constant conflict with the public opinion of the student body. I would like to know why concerns voiced time and time again by students are acknowledged without any action being taken to appease their concerns. |
mafox> |
We listen to students in a variety of ways. I meet regularly with Christopher Sweeten of AS. And, I have posted walk-in hours. And, we appointed a study group on campus life. |
mafox> |
Next month, Vice Chancellor Watson will provide a report of the varied study groups from the student life report. |
ucsd_muiron: |
STUDNETS FIRST! |
mafox> |
I agree. It was the motto of student affairs at NC State and is our goal here at UCSD. As you know from my first day, my focus has been on listening to the campus community and involving students and diverse viewpoints in our decision making. |
mmrivas: |
What and who are your priorities here is UCSD? |
mafox> |
I have accepted the position of chancellor because of my lifelong interest in higher education for students. My priorities here are to be innovative, enhance our international reach, and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration. |
eric: |
where did you post walk-in hours? |
mafox> |
on my chancellor's website that can be found to the left of the campus main homepage |
chel: |
Does meeting with one person truly allow you to make presumptions about the rest of us? |
mafox> |
No, but it gives me an opportunity to hear what is important to you. I am in large groups of students in other venues, for example, I have attended a recent GSA meeting to answer questions. |
save_oasis: |
how would feel if you were in our shoes |
mafox> |
I, too, would be frustrated with the overall situation. But, it is important to remember that budget cuts have affected and continue to affect critical programs and services across the campus and the UC system. |
a3white: |
why put it all on watson when students don't even "relate" to watson because there is hostility towards him b/ cof the budget cuts and OASIS |
mafox> |
Vice Chancellor Watson and his team are contending, as all units, with difficult decisions about funding. All students on our campus are valued and important to our community. Diversity has always been a priority for me. I've asked Prof. Jorge Huerta to serve as Associate Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer to ensure that all voices be heard and are weighed in our decision making. |
art: |
Is this really the chancellor? I feel that we (the students) are getting generic answers to important (and censored) questions and I would hope that the chancellor would not treat students in such a way |
mafox> |
Yes, can't you tell by my slow typing and my Texas drawl? |
mafox> |
But, seriously, this is the Chancellor and I am interested in our students' viewpoints. That's why I am connected with you now. |
ItsTooEarly: |
Chancellor, why is this chat at 10 in the morning? Come on, is the average student going to wake up at 10:00am just to chat with you? |
mafox> |
What time would you suggest for students? There are a number of students online now for the chat. |
revelle_student: |
How did you feel about the demonstrations yesterday in front of the Chancellor's complex? |
mafox> |
I was pleased to see students demonstrating outside the office. I talked with the students a few minutes on Monday. It's important for you to have the opportunity to voice your opinions. |
ItsTooEarly: |
I just don't think a time that can only accomodate 59 users is really fair to the student body. I mean, with under 20,000 undergrads only 59 bother to chat online? For your own sake, if you care about student viewpoints, maybe a later time where people might not have class or might be more awake would be more beneficial to getting your feedback. Or if you could chat for more than an hour. |
mafox> |
I'm open to your suggestions: what time would you suggest? |
jmontojo: |
When are you going to have another online chat to answer all the quetions we didn't get to today? Or should we meet with you personally? |
mafox> |
The chats are scheduled each quarter. Or, you may sign up for my office walk-in hours |
ItsTooEarly: |
I'm in the back of math class just so I can give this feedback to you Chancellor Fox, but in addition to missing this valuable opportunity to learn I might be creating a disturbance. I just wanted to share. |
mafox> |
Classroom time is a priority for students, so I'll look for another time for the chats that are more in tune with your schedules. |
art: |
Why do you answer the schedulinig questions instead of focusing on the people who actually came to chat about student issues? |
mafox> |
We are chatting about student issues but it is also important for me to find out from the group optimal times. The good news is that the first chat only included about 15 people; this one is at 66 at this time. I am heartened by that response. |
cortez: |
The more the put off OASIS questions the more you will hear from us. We dont want to make this a war from students to administration, but we do want to be heard an to have a response to our questions, especially mine that i have asked twice already. I want a precise answer. |
mafox> |
The demonstrations, my conversations with you, the chat and the emails I have received demonstrate clearly the importance of this issue. I pledge to you that the issues you have raised are being considered at the highest levels of the administration. I know that may sound perfunctory, but this is a complex issue that takes time to resolve. |
dwnwaigw: |
Dr. Fox, most studenst resent Marshall's DOC and think it's an unfair course. Would you look into the issue? |
mafox> |
I am unfamiliar with this issue. Please tell me about it |
khan: |
Can you please address what steps the UCSD administration are taking against the speech hate that the California Review and Muir Quarterly incited by publishing falsely depicting the Prophet Muhammad??? I am extremely devastated that this happened at the campus. |
mafox> |
I was recently made aware of these cartoons that appeared in California Review. These cartoons depict negative and insulting Muslim stereotypes and do not in any way reflect the views of either the University of California or the majority of UCSD students. |
mafox> |
We consider cartoons such as this, which are deeply hurtful to our campus Muslim community, to be counter to our Principles of Community and will seek to initiate a greater campus dialogue on this matter, to encourage a higher level of sensitivity, tolerance and acceptance. |
jbwatson: |
Can you please put the responses to these questions on your website? I have to go to class... |
mafox> |
The transcript will be posted on my website. |
dwnwaigw: |
DOC rules out courses for our majors, such as chem 6bL in my case. It is listed as 6 units, but is in actuality 8. It is also excessively biased. |
mafox> |
I hesitate to respond to this question without more information about the requirements for Marshall college' dimensions of culture. |
Steve: |
Why have you allowed SRTV to remain off the air despite all your comments that this would remain a student issue? Why did your position change once AS made actions (or were forced to by the recent special election) contrary to what other administrators were demanding? |
mafox> |
The SRTV charter prohibits the airing of indecent material between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. but it does not prohibit the airing of graphic depictions of sexual activity. This means SRTV show producers could air this type of material with no intervention by SRTV management. Unless the SRTV charter is revised to include this restriction, the signal would be limited to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. |
stephen: |
suggestion for next time: allow people to send in questions 2 hours ahead of time and then have some resposes ready so you can get basic questions out of the way faster and get to real disscusion |
mafox> |
I don't want to give you canned answers. That's not what I'm trying to do here. But, if there is a particular question you have, please send it to my email. |
Apcortez: |
Why is this chatroom censored? Why can't we see what issues other people are addressing? I dont think Chancellor, that you are the only one concerned about what is going on |
mafox> |
It gets too confusing if all the posts are not tied to the question that was asked. |
smwillia: |
I would like to thank you for the time you are taking to answer our questions to the best of you ability. Though I realize not all of our questions have been answered, I understand that responding to every question from 58 to 60 students is rather difficult. I appreciate you time well spent Madam Chancellor. |
mafox> |
Thanks. I enjoy the chats, although they challenge my typing! |
mssarah50: |
It is understandable that for the University to remain in good standing, it must retain and draw high quality instructors. However, if the academic resources for students are increasingly cut out from underneath, how can UCSD expect to retain the prestige and pride it carries with the academic excellence of its students? |
| mafox> |
When we make budgetary allocations, academic affairs is our priority ....before any other areas of the campus. I regret that I need to restate what we all are dealing with: sustained budget cuts over several years. We will continue to wrestle with these issues by keeping our students and their academic experience uppermost in our minds. |
rimejia: |
It seems to me that you don't want to answer our questions about the cuts to OASIS, and it just makes me wonder why. I'm a third year student here and most of the time I feel that the admistration doesn't exactly "truely care" like they say they do about the students. In these 3 years that i've been on campus my only home here is OASIS, and I would sincerely appreciated if you would answer the questions, of those of us who are concern with the recent cuts. |
mafox> |
I understand the importance of OASIS and am not trying to avoid the questions. I have answered a number of them and have pledged to discuss the opinions of students at the highest levels of the administration. |
s1gonzal: |
Do you really answer ALL the emails you receive? |
mafox> |
I try to answer all emails I receive. Sometimes it takes me a bit of time, but I try very hard to respond to my emails from the campus community. |
mafox> |
I can hear the bells tolling 11 a.m., so I want to thank all of you for participating in today's chat and I look forward to seeing you on campus. I'm sorry that I couldn't answer all questions, but I tried to select and answer a variety of questions that deal with the many issues on students' minds. Most important, I thank you for your participation and your obvious commitment to UCSD. |
