Web Chat with Chancellor Fox
Chancellor Marye Anne Fox held an hour-long Web chat with students at UCSD on October 19th. The following is a transcript of the chat.
mafox>   Good morning and welcome to my "Chancellor's Chat." As we begin the new 2005 - 2006 academic year, I am eager to hear from you and have an opportunity to listen to your ideas and respond to any questions you may have.
Bree:   Are you running in the 5K on Friday? What is the "challenge" this year? How many people are registered so far?
mafox>   No, I'll be walking and hope that we reach the 1500 challenge. so far 1071 are registered
j4jimene:   I was wondering if your agenda is busy for December 10th. I am a chairman for the 10th annual Adelante Latino Conference that does outreach to underrepresented youth of San Diego..it would be an honor to have you welcome the students if you had time
mafox>   I really enjoy the opportunity to welcome students. please contact my office to see about my availability
toni:   Do many students take advantage of your walk-in office hours?
mafox>   i have walk in hours today. each of the 4 openings is filled. so i think the hours are popular.
binh:   Hi
mafox>   welcome to the chat. how is your quarter going?
j4jimene:   thank you
Rob:   How many emails do you receive in a typical day?
mafox>   about 40 to 50
Syndee:   Where is your favorite place to spend time on campus?
mafox>   I like the sun god because there are always students around
shubbard:   i heard a rumor about changing the name of ERC...?
mafox>   No, I have not heard of any proposals to change the name of the college. What is it that you have heard?
sonia:   I pay $56 for my student parking, but every year it is harder to find a place to park
mafox>   Parking is a problem we all face on campus. We now have a new 1400 space garage under construction and the shuttle services has added an extra bus during peak hours. So we are trying to do what we can. Are you a shuttle rider?
shubbard:   something about regan college but i thought that was crazy
mafox>   Hmm, that one is one that I have not heard.
Chandra:   I read about the international strategy committee. Do you agree with the suggestions?
mafox>   I think we ought to aggressively seek international learning activities for our students. I just returned from China and found the opportunities there to be amazing International week is coming up in November - 14 to 18. A lot of activites are planned. have any of you studied abroad?
kdietze_ucsd.edu:   Hi everyone, just joined and don't see a thread.
mafox>   It's been more of a q and a so far, so tell me what is on your mind and we could begin a discussion
Chandra:   Wow -- China! What did you do there?
mafox>   Visited ministry of education and met with 10 university presidents with whom UC wants to establish partnerships. We visted campuses at Peking Univ in Beijing. Also, Fudan in Shanghai and Tsing hua in Beijing
csholley:   Nope, but looking forward to learning about it.
csholley:   Chancellor Fox have you had time to read the USESC Report? Any comments?
mafox>   yes, i found it very enlightening. any of the suggestions are very helpful. VC Watson is establishing committees to review the recommendations in depth
K2ofCali:   Given the resuls of the recent student satisfaction survey, do you think that establishing a yearbook would help to unify the school and serve to promote spirit?
mafox>   Any activity that involves students working together to promote community will greatly enhance student life and the student experience
mafox>   what elements of the report are most important to students. what would you like to see improved on campus?
kdietze_ucsd.edu:   I would love to see more students participate in long term mentoring with one or two professors. This is so beneficial. Would it be possible to ensure more effort is made to make students aware of 199's, 189's and so forth? I'm also excited about China!
mafox>   Mentoring is a key element of any educational experience in higher ed and in K-12. are you involved in mentoring in the city schools?
shubbard:   Do you reconize/agree with some of the findings of the study showing lots of "social" problems on our campus
mafox>   The study found students had identified shortcomings and we must pay attention to the findings
d4:   Last week, ASUCSD voted not to impose content restrictions on student-run television, specifically refusing an outright ban on sexually explicit content. Do you disapprove of ASUCSD's decision, and if so, what actions will you take as a result?
mafox>   Last year, the issue was resolved among students and I am hopeful that will happen again if the issue should arise UCSD feels strongly and it is our tradition to uphold and respect our Principles of Community. What do you think we can do in this situation?
csholley:   I am a member of the Sixth College Student Council, how can we help the administration most effectively use the report?
mafox>   Become involved with the committees to be formed. share your mafox> ideas and work with us to improve life on campus
csholley:   I am confident that AS will act appopriately in the interests of the students and the administration.
kdietze_ucsd.edu:

No, let me clarify. I was allowed to work with two professors here who mentored me. I was even able to co-publish a paper with one professor. But I had to be very pro-active. I had to search to find out that UCSD offered 199's-where one can "create a class" This is how I learned to research, not in the classroom.

csholley:   I highly agree that we need to improve the image of UCSD. Most students are not aware of the amazing feats that students accomplish in the academic, research, and sports arenas. The committee recommended hanging banners to make the University seem more welcoming, I support that idea.
mafox>

I admire your efforts and hope other students learn from your efforts. What do you think we can do to open these opportunities to other students?

d4:

Regarding the Student Experience report, I relate strongly to principle 7 regarding the physical environment.

kdietze_ucsd.edu:   Let them promote them at Orientations?
mafox>

I hope you saw our Welcome banners at the Price Center this year. we wanted to officially welcome students back to campus

d4:   If you're asking me what the University can do with regard to the content of student media, I think the most important principle is that all viewpoints should have access to the media and that we should encourage dialogue. Beyond ensuring that, the University should make clear that viewpoints expressed in student media do not necessarily represent those of UC or UCSD.
csholley:   I did, but we need the banners in the community, off campus.
mafox>   I will talk with VC Watson about adding this item to orientation
mafox>   d4, I appreciate your perspective
csholley:   If we are to become involved in the USESC Report Committees, the formation of these committees must be publicized so that all students are aware of their creation.
kdietze_ucsd.edu:

I loved the banner at the price center!

kdietze_ucsd.edu:   Oh, I see--to show that the community embraces the students, where do you suggest?
mafox>

csholley, AS President christopher sweeten is working on this effort with signs for both campus and in local stores csholley, i will pass along your suggestion about publicizing the committees

rcorell:   I agree that a physical presence is the first step to creating a better campus climate at UCSD. As a member of the Associated Students, we are taking steps to make UCSD more " Triton Territory " friendly -- getting businesses to hang signs in their establishments, promoting the use of the Triton and not Geisel Library as our mascot, and getting more school spirit rallied on campus. Students need to be happier with the accomplishments that we have already achieved. What can the administration do to help promote and further support/fund our efforts?
abc:

what is your typical day at work like?

mafox>

I start early and end late....just like our students do with studying and classes!

csholley:   I hope that Sweeten is doing so with the full support of the Admin.
mafox>   rcorell, The committees will be evaluating what we can do. I look forward to hearing additional news about the AS efforts
Justin:   I would like to see better walkways on campus. Some of the pavement is deteriorated, full of puddles in the rain, and somewhat inefficient for transportation means
mafox>

csholley, AS President Sweeten has been exceptional in keeping me informed of AS activities. He meets regularly with me

Justin:   Everyone here seems to be concerned about spiraling tuition costs. How do you address this issue, and how does the forecast for the future look?
mafox>

The regents set our tuition and regularly hear from students in public forums. the chancellors also reflect the views of students as we discuss the future for the UC

csholley:   Thanks for taking an active role in students' lives. I think this forum is a terrific, one-of-a-kind idea, even if it is for only an hour.
supersauce:   Hello, whats happening.. where is the chatting?
supersauce:   Question: Hello ?
mafox>   supersauce, is there something on your mind that we should discuss? You only see the chat from the point at which you sign on
ucsdmoderator>

Please be aware that we have found that students signing on late may not be seeing the full chat conversation. We will be posting the transcript later on my website at http://www-chancellor.ucsd.edu

kdietze_ucsd.edu:

supersauce, when you first log in you don't see the thread. Glad you joined in. I agree with csholley--this is great.

Justin:   The cost of fruit is staggering. $1.60 per avocado? Give me a break. UCSD needs to plant its own fruit trees if law permits. Space is a terrible thing to waste.
Justin:   btw I mention fruit b/c today is so-called "Love you Body" day, and we need to eat at least 5 a day
shub:

when will we be changing our sports programs to div 1

mafox>

this is an option suggested in the undergraduate report but one must realize that it would require a great deal of funding

mafox>

justin, thanks for the reminder about healthy and love your body day

Justin:   With regards to community and social issues, I think UCSD is perfectly well off. I think financial issues are more troubling.
supersauce:   How come the food at the commons taste so bad... lets have a culinary school.
mafox>

supersauce, are you a chef? are you offering to cook?

shub:

i really like the idea of fruit producing trees on campus

kdietze_ucsd.edu:   Justin--now there is an idea that would promote community AND save money. Don't know the applicable policies but community gardening would bring together a lot of people!! (students/staff/academics)
csholley:   About Div I, we need to wait. We are competitive in Div II, and students seldom show up to those games...lets focus on our current teams, which do exceptionally well.
SomeDude:   I second shub's concern
d4:   Justin: UCSD does have its own fruit trees. Get involved with the UCSD Farm Co-op!
2005alum:   I agree, csholley.
kdietze_ucsd.edu:   d4 Maybe it needs to be promoted, I know a lot about UCSD and did not know this. Perhaps expanded?
mafox>

d4, can you provide your fellow students with more info about coop?

kdietze_ucsd.edu:

Justin is correct. There are places on campus where it is so wet you can not walk through--parts of TMC field, for example.

rcorell:

Are you going to be running/walking in the Chancellors 5k this Friday? Or just cheering us on?

mafox>

I'll walk some of the route and greet the finishers

SomeDude:   Our school would benefit greatly from an improved athletics program, i.e. real division 1 teams as opposed to a bunch of sports clubs.
FerrarisRcool:   when will the chancellor have an open house for us all to see the inside of that beauty?
mafox>

if you are talking about university house, i would love to have people there but it is unsafe

d4:   Here are some contacts for the UCSD Farm Co-op:
FerrarisRcool:   the only way to do that would be to offer sports scholarships
csholley:   Moderator, I have sent questions for two other topics, will the Chancellor have time to respond?
ucsdmoderator>

The Chancellor is doing her best to keep up w/ all the different threads, she will try to get to them all. Thank you for your active participation.

2005alum:   UCSD will never (at least not in the near future) have "real" D1 teams because there is no scholarship money, and it is highly unlikely that a superstar athlete would come play their sport for free when they can get a full-ride plus all the other benefits that D1 athletes receive just up the coast at ucla or usc...
csholley:   This report I keep mentioning, USESC report, what kind of publicity is it getting? Maybe students want something to stand behind, but don't know it exists. Can the admin post a link on TritonLink? I will post the link below: http://studentresearch.ucsd.edu/Satisfaction/
mafox>

I will confirm that it is posted and will ask that it be posted on my chancellor's website as well

FerrarisRcool:   chancellor: do you really live in that big house overlooking the cliffs?
mafox>

No, that's university house and it is unsafe to live there

2005alum:   you should support the teams that the school has now- so many of them are highly under-recognized.
d4:   One contact for the UCSD Farm Co-op: Thomas Ryden <thomas_ryden@yahoo.com>. Also, talk to SOLO. I think they are a registered student organization. Their advisor is probably Marcia Strong.
shub:   how about just transitioning 1 team at a time. I think soccer is 18-2
FerrarisRcool:   i mean the view must be ridiculous
2005alum:   are schools even allowed to do that?
rcorell:

How do you think that we can get alumni more involved at UCSD?

mafox>

we are actively working with Alumni director John Valva to engage our alumni in their alma mater. what else do you think we can do?

concernedStudent:   moderator, I submitted a question 20 min ago, when is it going to be posted?
shub:   are you planning on making this chatroom a monthly thing?
mafox>

i don't know if we have the audience for monthly. we have been trying to gain support from students to do this at the beginning and the end of the school year

kdietze_ucsd.edu:

I would suggest more volunteering at student events--or speaking at student events??Alumni events are nice, but they don't engage current students much.

ucsdmoderator>

concerned student: i believe we have answered the questions we have from you. which one was not answered?

2005alum:   As an alum, I think that any effort that attempts to engage alum with the school needs to start out at the undergraduate level. So many students at UCSD are completely disenfranchised with the university and feel no connection or ties to the school once they have graduated
concernedStudent:   Chancellor, health insurance premiums have increased but benefits have decreased by about 10% this year. Can you explain why that is?
mafox>

Like all universities, we are concerned about rapidly increasing health costs. i know the office of the president is negotiating for the best policies for the greatest value

rcorell:   I think having this be a monthly opportunity would be wonderful!
2005alum:   i agree, rcorell.
mafox>

rcorell, we would need this to be driven by student interest for this to be successful. Is there sufficient interest for a monthly chat?

csholley:   I agree, rcorell
kdietze_ucsd.edu:   Perhaps once the word gets out, you will find a larger audience.
2005alum:   Although there was some improvement in the sense of community in the 4 years I was at UCSD, I think that this is an area that can be greatly improved upon. If people have pride and love for their alma mater, they are more likely to be engaged with it post-graduation and also to donate money.
csholley:

The audience is here!

mafox>   are you all volunteering to promote the chat among students
rcorell:   2005alum, I agree with you. We are trying to get current students to see the benefits more.. networking and job opportunities and mentoring, especially.
rcorell:   I'm also working with UCSD Development and the Alumni Association to give our 100,000+ alumni more updates on UCSD and get feedback from them. As well, we are working to get current students to become student members of the AA. We need more opportunities for students to see what the AA can do for them. Any sugestions?
d4:   Let's get AS and GSA more involved in promoting this forum to students.
d4:   Echoing 2005alum's comment with a famous quote from UCSD students past, I would say: "Give Our Campus Life Through Student Empowerment"
kdietze_ucsd.edu:   People participate in recurring events more readily. Perhaps it would not always have to be MaryeAnn. We have VC's too, as well as Provosts and Deans.
kdietze_ucsd.edu:   Right ON yes yes yes
ucsdmoderator>   We are out of time, thank you for your participation.
mafox>

Thanks to all the students who joined me in today's chat. I really enjoyed this exchange. If I didn't get to your question, I encourage you to visit during my student walk in hours posted on my webpage. Please continue to send me your thoughts and insights by writing to me at chancellor@ucsd.edu. Thank you

rcorell:   I'll talk about this chat at the AS meeting tonight.. and I'll talk to the Guardian today as well.. we can DEFINITELY promote this.
shub:   at least once a quarter
