Web Chat with Chancellor Fox
Chancellor Marye Anne Fox held an hour-long Web chat with students at UCSD on November 28th, 2007. The following is a transcript of the chat.

MA_Fox> Hello and welcome to my Chancellor’s Chat. I’m looking forward to spending the next hour with you and answering your questions and concerns.

Katie: How is the university helping fire victims?

MA_Fox> I’m proud of how the UCSD community stepped up to respond to our campus’s and community’s needs during and after the recent wildfires.

Katie: How is the university helping fire victims?

MA_Fox> We activated the Emergency Operations Center on campus. We held a post wildfire town hall where we heard from the campus community.

Katie: How is the university helping fire victims?

MA_Fox> We are helping those who lost their homes through a variety of programs.

Katie: How is the university helping fire victims?

MA_Fox> our staff associations and student orgs are working with local Native American community to help with recovery efforts.

Sally_Kim: In addition, I know that there are many donations going around the campus for the fire victims
MA_Fox> Yes, at the dining halls. I want to commend the medical center - and the Burn Center in particular - for
their work to treat all burn victims in the region.

Sally_Kim: How was your thanksgiving chancellor?

MA_Fox> very relaxing. and yours?

ucsd_fresh: hello chancellor fox! I am an incoming freshmen to this school and love it here so far =) I just wanted to ask if there are any plans to update the webpage, it seems
grossly out of date..

MA_Fox> I'm happy to answer that question. We will roll out a new webpage later in December. It's cool. It's a very exciting project. Students helped us the design and usability testing. It will include a new look for TritonLink

Sally_Kim: Mine too! Oh how come we can't see the final planner for winter quarter?

MA_Fox> We will work on this aspect of the web. Thanks for alerting us to it.

Mike_Jones: How is the university planning on encouraging the enrollment of more minorities, specifically African-Americans?

MA_Fox> That is a topic of great interest to all of us
jcobian: well i just wanted to voice out my concern thank you for your time :)
MA_Fox> Tonite, we're traveling with a group to Otay Ranch High School. We expect over 300 people tonight. And, the new PULSE is creating lots more outreach efforts by students. Two weeks ago, we had a very successful program,"Dare to Dream". Look at the University Communications home page (http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu).

ucsd_fresh: Thank you for answering my previous question. I looked at the expansion.ucsd.edu page and it seems it hasn't been updated in awhile. Are the plans for
the expansion of the price center still set for January, or has it been delayed?

kellyll: Chancellor, how important is the parking situation to you?

MA_Fox> It is important to everyone on campus

Sally_Kim: Also UCSD sponsors The Preuss School which I believe is a good motivation for minority and low-income students to go to college

MA_Fox> We have just opened the Hopkins structure this fall. We continue to work alternate transportation options, and we're building more on campus housing...so cars aren't needed.

samanthab: i heard there's going to be one graduation ceremony for all students this year is that true?

MA_Fox> Not a graduation ceremony, but there is a group planning a campuswide event to celebrate students who are graduating. We are actively working to plan that event. But, graduates will still attend their individual graduation ceremonies.

kellyll: Do you have any concerns about the new transfer student housing that is going in over on the ERC campus?

MA_Fox> We're thrilled with providing more housing for students. we're currently at 39% and hope to go to 50%. We know when more students are on campus, there is more interaction and a sense of community. Student life depends on being here to enjoy the activities.

BrandonMuir: I also think that UCSD shouldn't false advertise the hopkins parking structure as "additional parking spaces" seeing that half of the north parking was closed down.

Mike_Jones: What are the latest estimates on the completion of Price Center?

MA_Fox> The expansion is on schedule. We're already seeing the effects on students having gathering places.

Chancellor_Scholars_United: I am a Chancelllor Scholar, and I would like to express one of my concerns. I feel that Chancellor Scholars are not known and respected by the
school as Regents Scholars are. Regents scholars have a ceremony that you host, whereas Chancellor Scholars get nothing. We are scholars named after you, and i feel that you should give us some attention and time as well. You should host a reception for us so that we may know you and other fellow Chancellor Scholars. When people find out
that I'm a chancellor scholar, they asked me if I've ever met or seen you. I tell them no and they are shocked! This is an embarassment to me, to you, and to the school. I hope
to see some changes on your part soon! Thank you!

MA_Fox> First, I'd like to congratulate you on the scholarship. I want to encourage you and all students to come to see me during my posted hours. Come and talk with me about it. You can find it on my website.

samanthab: are we going to have a celebrity speaker for the campus wide event?

MA_Fox> We are evaluating all potential speakers. Students on the planning committee have been very creative in developing a list of potential speakers. We have to ensure that we identify a speaker who is within our budget and is available.

Sally_Kim: Can I go to your hours even without specific questions?

MA_Fox> Absolutely. Most students who come to see me don't have a specific agenda item. We just get to know each other.

BrandonMuir: I went to your posted hours one time, and you deferred all of my questions to others. What can expect to talk about with you in your posted hours?

MA_Fox> When students come to me with an issue, I connect them with the individuals or unit that can best address the concern

samanthab: i see. it's just that some other schools have actors and big-name politicians and it would be really exciting if we could get them too, you know? thanks so much for answering my questions!

Chancellor_Scholars_United: Chancellor Fox, all that I request is that you include Chancellor Scholars in the ceremony you hold for Regents Scholar.

MA_Fox> I appreciate this suggestion and promise that I will look into it.

Chancellor_Scholars_United: thank you very much

jc: how do we go about getting those artworks on campus because the Stewart Art collection has a monopoly over where any new artworks can be placed.

MA_Fox> The Stuart Collection is led by Mary Beebe and she is within Academic Affairs. I suggest that you see about an appt with Mary.

Chancellor_Scholars_United: who else can i talk to regarding this?

MA_Fox> Vice Chancellor Penny Rue
MA_Fox> She would be happy to meet with you.

BrandonMuir: As a med scholar, i feel that UCSD isn't offering me the preparation it advertised to in preparing for SOM. Most of the professors for the core classes are not
part of the permanent faculty. Can you help?

MA_Fox> I would encourage you to visit Career Services to take advantage of their specialized pre-med advising.

Chancellor_Scholars_United: i hope you will take my consideration in more significance

MA_Fox> How are you doing at this point in the quarter ...especially given that we lost a week of class?

Chancellor_Scholars_United: Thank you

BrandonMuir: How do we make an appointment with VCs and Academic Senates?

MA_Fox> One of the most effective ways to reach VCs and the Acad Senate is to look on the Blink website under faculty/staff and you'll see their assistant's name

Sally_Kim: Right after the fire break, I was a bit overwhelming because of the academic strain.

MA_Fox> You can contact the assts to make an appt

Sally_Kim: *overwhelmed

BrandonMuir: the week off took a lot of pressure off me. I had time catching up on school work.

MA_Fox> That's good to hear.

BrandonMuir: Chancellor Fox, how do we know who's part of the new academic senate? I don't think it's on their website yet.

Sally_Kim: but not that I think about it, I'm so proud of all the UCSD faculty and students who were able to handle not only with the emotional but academic pressure.

ucsd_fresh: This quarter feels extremely short... I cannot believe its finals very soon!

MA_Fox> Go to the Acad Senate website, and click on the Assembly to see the list.

BrandonMuir: During the fire week, I know VC Rue stated in her announcement that the faculty should adjust their syllabus and not cram two weeks worth of materials into one. But many faculty still crammed two weeks into one. Is there anything you can do to make sure this won't happen again in the future?

ljqui: Chancellor Fox, what do you think of the new SPACES program?

MA_Fox> We are delighted to have students so actively involved in recruitment and retention. Students are critical to creating a welcoming climate. I know this has been challenging for all students. We need to trust the faculty
to prepare you for what's ahead. But we do understand the pressures this type of situation caused for every student.

eoliphan: I lost my house during the fires and this quarter has been particularly hard academicaly and otherwise.

MA_Fox> Please check in with the dean of student affairs in your college. they're here to help. We are very sorry to hear of your loss.

surfergirl: can we have more events for students by the beach?

BrandonMuir: How big can we expect ucsd to be in the upcoming academic year in terms of the 2012 admits?

MA_Fox> Our enrollment plans are to slowly increase our total enrollments to 30,000 by 2010. Most growth is to occur in the graduate student population.
MA_Fox> Surfergirl, please suggest activities for your fellow students to your college council or AS Programming.

Sally_Kim: Thank you for your kindness in taking your time to chat with us. You are a big encouragement to our campus, and I hope you continue to remain strong in your
mission.

BrandonMuir: UCLA and Berkeley don't offer the TAG program for JC transfers, as one of the top three UCs, will UCSD continue to offer that program to guarantee admission to ucsd for any Jc students above a 2.8 that took all the required classes?

MA_Fox> Yes, we want to make it as straightforward as possible for JC students to transfer into UCSD. 1600 students this fall were transfer students....that's nearly 40% of our undergraduate population.

jwhittem: Chancellor Fox, has ucsd implemented or developed emergency preparedness plans that are efficient and timely, as to avoid such confusion and delays like those experienced in the VA Tech tragedy?

MA_Fox> Yes, I think we have just had a good example of how our emer planning has worked for the campus. I encourage to our emergency planning preparedness website that you can access off the TritonLink webpage. I encourage you, as well, to sign up for the emer alerts.
MA_Fox> Text message and phone message...it's voluntary and I encourage you to consider those options.

alancart: with the number of students increasing, how will housing accommodate all these students, if as of now they are turning double rooms into triples because there is not
enough space. Also will there ever be a 4 year option in school housing as opposed to having to move out after your sophomore year?

MA_Fox> Lots of new student housing is under development. North Campus Housing will have room for upper division students, as well as transfer students. You also could consider becoming an RA.

BrandonMuir: and how is ucsd preparing for the increasing amount of undergrads?

MA_Fox> We will focus on enhancing the quality of student life, especially within the college environment

alancart: thank you for the response
alancart: I dont think i have the time to be an RA, but it would be nice to have the option of staying on campus for next year.

MA_Fox> That's understandable, but it is a great way to become involved on campus. We have only a few minutes left. Any other pressing questions?

jwhittem: Thanks for taking the time to chat & for your answer on emergency preparedness.

MA_Fox> I am afraid that we are just about out of time for today. I have enjoyed spending time with you. And, I look forward to our next chat.
MA_Fox> And, please do consider signing up for walk-in hours.
MA_Fox> And let us know how you like the new website
MA_Fox> I hope you all do well on your final exams
MA_Fox> And you have a good holiday and break
