“Inside Innovation,” a new series of free, public presentations, features the latest innovation technologies by UC San Diego, with opportunities for participants to get an inside look at what’s happening in our labs, explore commercialization opportunities, and inquire about licensing.

Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine Pradipta Ghosh, second guest in the series, will address “The Herculean Task of Killing Cancer Cells: Spare the Heads of Hydra; Strike the Heart,” at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18, in the Roth Auditorium at the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine.

A kind of “cellular sleuth,” Ghosh works to discover novel interfaces at the crossroads of certain proteins and growth-factor signaling pathways. Her lab’s researchers study the significance of those interfaces in different organ systems as they apply to chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and organ fibrosis, all of which are multi-receptor in origin and challenging to medical science.

After graduating as the Best Outgoing Student in a nationwide ranking from the top medical school in India, Ghosh came to the U.S in 2001 in search of the next challenge, that of a career in biomedical science. This twist in her career was prompted by a famous quote that she had stumbled upon -- "Medicine is not only an art; it is also a science. It does not consist of compounding pills and plasters; it deals with the very processes of life, which must be understood before they may be guided.”

Sponsored by the Office of Research Affairs and the Office of Innovation and Commercialization, the “Inside Innovation” presentations are held 4-6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month at the same venue. A networking reception will follow each presentation.

Upcoming presenters on the schedule include Dr. Andrew Kahn, Associate Professor Catriona Jamieson, and Associate Professor Shirley Meng, with topics ranging from nanoengineering to human cellular processes.

“The new series is a great opportunity for the campus and community to learn about the creative and problem-solving innovations now being developed at UC San Diego,” said Paul Roben, associate vice chancellor for innovation and commercialization. “Each presentation will highlight the imagination, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit driving much of our research.”
