Black Friday and Cyber Monday now have a philanthropic counterpart: #GivingTuesday. The national day of giving—currently in its second year—is slated for Dec. 3. UC San Diego is once again participating as an official partner of #GivingTuesday, which encourages charitable giving and celebrates the spirit of philanthropy.

In addition to making a gift to nonprofits—including universities—you are passionate about, a key part of the #GivingTuesday initiative is sharing with your friends, family, colleagues and community how and why you give back. Participants are invited to follow #GivingTuesday on Twitter and to share their acts of giving on Dec. 3 with their friends and followers on social media. You can also tell us how you are making a difference by sharing to UC San Diego’s Facebook page or send us a tweet @UCSanDiego.

“#GivingTuesday provides a great opportunity for the UC San Diego community to talk about the areas of campus they are passionate about supporting,” said JoEllen Kay, senior director of Annual Giving at UC San Diego. “Individuals are encouraged to not only give back, but to also share with their friends, families and social networks what they support and why it matters.”

#GivingTuesday began with organizations such as New York’s 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation and quickly grew as hundreds of nonprofits and corporations, including Microsoft, Cisco Systems, Blackbaud and Harvard University, signed on as partners.

UC San Diego’s Alumni and Community Engagement is leading UC San Diego in this year’s #GivingTuesday by encouraging alumni and friends to support future generations of Tritons by giving to undergraduate scholarships.

“The gift of education has the power to transform lives,” said Kay. “For a first generation college student, a scholarship can change a life’s trajectory.”

Increasing the impact of your donation, gifts may be doubled or tripled through employer matching gifts programs. Many companies will match their employees’ (and sometimes even employee spouses’) donations to nonprofit organizations. Go here to learn if your employer has a matching gifts program.

UC San Diego students, staff, faculty, alumni and friends can join #GivingTuesday and support the university by participating on Dec. 3. For more information or to make your gift, go here.
