UC San Diego’s Chancellor’s Community Advisory Board Connects Campus with Community

The Chancellor’s Community Advisory Board at the University of California San Diego is composed of 27 local leaders and professionals who work to foster and strengthen positive relationships between the campus and community. A new chair and six new members have joined the 2016-17 board.

Yen Tu, a UC San Diego alumna who runs her own marketing, outreach and event consulting firm, has been selected as chair. New board members include: Ruben Barrales, president of Grow Elect; Grace Chui-Miller, chief financial officer of Correlation Ventures; William D. Lynch, owner and president of the William D. Lynch Company; Lidia S. Martinez, manager of Community Affairs and Grassroots for Southwest Airlines; Peter S. Silva, president of Silva-Silva International; and Teresa Stivers, chief executive officer of Walden Family Services.

The primary objectives of the board are to advise the Chancellor about community issues, raise awareness about the role of UC San Diego in the community, and advocate for the university and public higher education. Throughout the year members participate in early outreach campaigns to admitted students throughout the state, connect with local representatives about the university’s impact and host events such as educational summits and advocacy trainings.

“Chancellor’s Community Advisory Board members are vital partners and advocates for programs that support UC San Diego’s mission of public service, educational access and research that benefits society,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “We are pleased to welcome our new chair and board members, and appreciate the time and expertise all members contribute towards achieving our collective goals and vision.”

The incoming Chancellor’s Community Advisory Board chair is:

Yen Tu

Yen Tu, President of Yen C. Tu Consulting

Yen Tu is a 1990 graduate of UC San Diego and president of Yen C. Tu Consulting. She specializes in marketing, community outreach and special events for clients such as the City of San Diego, Asian Business Association and I Love a Clean San Diego. Previously she served as community relations manager for Viejas Enterprises; executive director for the Asian Business Association; senior campaigner for United Way of San Diego County; and legislative aid for two City of San Diego Council Members and one County Supervisor.

Ruben Barrales

Ruben Barrales, President, Grow Elect

Ruben Barrales is the president of Grow Elect, an organization that empowers the Latino community by helping Latino leaders get elected to public office in local and state government.  He served previously as CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, deputy assistant to President George W. Bush, and was elected to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. Barrales also serves on the Board of Directors for the Public Policy Institute of California. He graduated from UC Riverside with a BA in political science in administrative studies.

Grace Chui-Miller

Grace Chui-Miller, Chief Financial Officer, Correlation Ventures

Grace Chui-Miller is chief financial officer of Correlation Ventures and is responsible for the financial reporting of the firm’s investment funds as well as day-to-day management of firm-wide finance, operations and investment monitoring. Previously she was the chief financial officer of DCM, a technology-focused venture capital firm, and an audit manager for KPMG LLP. Chui-Miller received her MBA from the Anderson School at UCLA and a BA in Quantitative Economics and Decision Sciences from UC San Diego.

William D. Lynch

William D. Lynch, Owner and President, William D. Lynch Company

William D. Lynch is the owner and president of the William D. Lynch Company. He is founder and chairman of the board of the William D. Lynch Foundation for Children through which Lynch has donated over $2.5 million to charitable causes. He is the founder and chairman, Education Policy and Law at University of San Diego. Lynch has also served on numerous boards, including San Diego Council on Literacy, San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, High Tech High, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, among others.

Lidia S. Martinez

Lidia S. Martinez, Manager of Community Affairs and Grassroots, Southwest Airlines

Lidia S. Martinez is the manager of Community Affairs and Grassroots for Southwest Airlines. She leads a team of managers responsible for Southwest’s community outreach and helps maintain relationships with nonprofit organizations, chambers of commerce and community leaders. Martinez is also involved in a variety of organizations dedicated to empowering underrepresented communities and serves on numerous community boards. She earned a Business Administration degree with a focus in Marketing from the University of Texas in Arlington.

Peter S. Silva

Peter S. Silva, President, Silva-Silva International

Peter S. Silva is president of Silva-Silva International, a small civil engineering firm in San Diego. He is a civil engineer with more than 35 years of experience in water, wastewater and U.S.-Mexico border issues. Silva served as Assistant Administrator for Water for the U.S. EPA, appointed by President Obama. He also served on the Border Environment Cooperation Commission, appointed by President Clinton, as well as vice chair of the California Water Resources Control Board. Silva earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona.

Teresa Stivers

Teresa Stivers, CEO Walden Family Services

Teresa Stivers is CEO of Walden Family Services, where she oversees administration, operations, public relations and fundraising. Under her leadership, Walden became one of the first California agencies to offer transitional housing and support services for youth remaining in foster care. Previously she served as program director and executive director of the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation (now Promises2Kids) and deputy chief of staff to San Diego Mayor Susan Golding. She received a BA in Communications from UC San Diego.
