Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Healthiness: Health Care Reform Unplugged April 10 at UC San Diego

“Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Healthiness” on April 10 at UC San Diego will consider at the future of healthcare.

The arguments have been made in the case of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Not only will the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling determine presidential powers and constitutional limits of government, but it will also set a course for healthcare, health law and economics for all Americans. On Tuesday, April 10 at 5 p.m., UCSD Alumni will host “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Healthiness,” to discuss new realities about what health care means in this nation—no matter how the Supreme Court rules.

Free and open to the public, the event will take place at the newly opened UC San Diego Telemedicine Building, in the university’s School of Medicine.

A panel of distinguished medical and legal insiders will provide unique insight and help unravel the legalities, economics, ethics and implications of health care. Panelists will include:

• Melissa Famulari, Ph.D., a lecturer and vice chair in Undergraduate Education, UC San Diego Department of Economics, who was formerly a research economist with the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the U.S. Department of Labor
• Julianne Howell, Ph.D., a health policy consultant, and former director of Health Sciences Planning at UC San Diego
• Glenn Smith, J.D., LL.M., a professor of Law at California Western School of Law, and past chair of the Section on Legislation of the Association of American Law Schools
• Nick Yphantides, M.D., M.P.H, a family physician who serves as the Chief Medical Officer for the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency

The panel will be moderated by Paul Friedman, M.D., professor emeritus and former dean for Academic Affairs at UC San Diego. Friedman has been active in pulmonary radiology research since retirement.
