Linda S. Greene is appointed UC San Diego’s first Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (VC-EDI).

Following a comprehensive nationwide search, today the University of California Regents approved the appointment of Linda S. Greene as UC San Diego’s first Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (VC-EDI). She will report to Suresh Subramani, Executive Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs, with an indirect reporting relationship to Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla.

“At UC San Diego, we aspire to create a culture of inclusiveness,” said Chancellor Khosla. “As our new Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Linda Greene will ensure that we—students, staff, faculty and community members—continue to work together to provide a welcoming campus for people from all backgrounds and walks of life.”

Greene will lead the development of a diversity strategic plan for UC San Diego. This work will be integrated into the overall strategic planning effort getting underway on campus and will provide an important foundational element in furthering the academic mission of the campus. Additionally, the plan will include metrics to ensure that the campus is employing best practices that both research and experience show to have a real impact. The VC-EDI will develop broad-based partnerships throughout the campus, across the UC system and with external constituents including UC San Diego’s local and K-12 communities, donors, industry partners and other supporters.

Added Vice Chancellor Subramani, “Professor Greene is joining the campus at a pivotal time in our history. As we look ahead to our next fifty years, it is imperative that we embrace and actively advance issues of diversity, equity and inclusion as core principles, inextricably linked to the future success and academic excellence of our campus.”

Currently the Evjue-Bascom Professor of Law at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Greene’s teaching and academic scholarship are concentrated in the areas of Constitutional Law, Civil Procedure, Legislation, Civil Rights and Sports Law. She has extensive leadership experience with a proven record of success in areas relating to equity, diversity and inclusion.

As Associate Vice Chancellor  for Academic Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she led a strategic hiring initiative to help promote new areas of interdisciplinary scholarship and curricular offerings and to increase the number of women in science and engineering, and minority faculty generally. She led professional development and retention initiatives and developed and promoted policies to advance gender equity. Greene also led other inclusionary programs that supported faculty as well as staff and enhanced the educational experience of students. Prior to becoming Associate Vice Chancellor, she was a leader of significant faculty governance activity at the UW Law School as well as the UW campus and also an innovator in law faculty diversity initiatives nationwide.

Greene will join the campus in January 2013 after she completes her current teaching responsibilities, but will travel to San Diego during the upcoming quarter to become acquainted with our campus and diversity programs.
