By the age of 4, Matthew Haemsch had undergone 16 rounds of chemotherapy and a surgery to remove a cancerous tumor on his adrenal gland. Yet, his small body remained riddled with a rare pediatric cancer. With no other treatment options left, Matthew’s doctors at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis recommended the family consider an investigational therapy under development at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Cool Campus Challenge Kicks Off

Launching this week, the University of California’s Cool Campus Challenge aims to get everyone on board with the carbon neutrality effort. The systemwide competition, which runs through Dec. 10, encourages UC faculty, staff and students to help make UC carbon neutral by 2025. Participants will be challenged to take steps to reduce their carbon footprints using an online tool to track their activity and earn points for their campus.
