UC San Diego Microgrid Ensures Reliable, Secure Energy Supply

Maintaining a steady supply of sustainable and cost-effective electricity and avoiding power outages is a top priority at UC San Diego. To do so, UC San Diego utilizes a microgrid system made up of natural and conventional energy technology for 90 percent of the electricity used on campus, thus saving $850,000 a month in power costs. In the event of a regional power outage, the system can disconnect from the San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) power grid, effectively turning the campus into a self-sustaining energy island.
