Rich, Collaborative Environment Advances Patient Care

UC San Diego Health Sciences has entered a period of remarkable growth, one that will strengthen its position as a destination academic medical center. In addition to the recent addition of the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center and Medical Education & Telemedicine Building, plans are underway for the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute building (projected to open in 2015) and the Jacobs Medical Center (with a planned 2016 opening.) UC San Diego Unveils Center for the Future of Surgery

“The lab is unbelievable. I consider myself lucky. When I am not writing research papers, I can take a break and train on the new robots,” said Dr. Elisa Coker, a 4th year resident in the Department of Surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine. What Coker is referring to is the recently opened Center for the Future of Surgery located in the new Medical Education and Telemedicine Building at the School of Medicine. Read More »

First-ever Procedure in Region’s Only Hybrid Operating Room

UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center experts have performed San Diego’s first-ever coronary revascularization procedure using a hybrid operating room, the only facility of its kind in the region. The state-of-the-art operating room allows patients to be treated in one place at one time without having to schedule multiple procedures. The result is less time in the operating room and reduced costs for hospitalization. Read More »

Need Childcare in a Pinch?
New Benefit Offers Access to Caregivers

Beginning Jan. 1, UC employees will be able to find emergency backup childcare and other services using Sittercity. The new benefit will be available to all faculty and staff covered by UC benefits, except where collective bargaining is required. Sittercity has an online database of nearly 2 million pre-screened caregivers. The referral service includes more than just backup childcare. UC faculty and staff can use it to find in-home nannies, childcare providers, eldercare providers, transportation, dog walkers, pet sitters, tutors, housekeepers and more. Read More »

	Looking Back on Thirty Years of AIDS/HIV Research Dr. Douglas Richman, director of the Center for AIDS Research at UC San Diego, discusses the current status and future of HIV/AIDS research in this video. Richman, a professor of pathology and medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, has focused his research on HIV disease and pathogenesis for the past 30 years. His laboratory was the first to identify HIV drug resistance. Richman holds the Florence Seeley Riford Chair in AIDS Research and is a staff physician at the VA San Diego Healthcare System.
