From UC San Diego to the Moon

Undergraduates man mission that takes pictures of moon at request of middle school students

Students in more than 2,700 schools from 52 countries have started requesting pictures in the past few weeks of specific areas of the moon from two spacecraft orbiting the Earth. But little do they know that their requests go to an operations center located on the UC San Diego campus manned by undergraduate students. The MoonKAM mission kicked off March 12 and is an outreach project of Sally Ride Science, a science education company headed by the first American woman in space, who also is a former UC San Diego physics professor. UC San Diego Executive Vice Chancellor Meets with State Legislators in Sacramento

Suresh Subramani, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, met with state legislators in Sacramento Tuesday to discuss the university’s academic mission and vision for the future. Subramani clearly communicated the value of UC San Diego’s academic programs, faculty and students for the state.  He also stressed the importance of investing in higher education to ensure a vibrant economy and to remain competitive internationally.

San Diego Supercomputer Center Graduate Student Awarded Fellowship

A graduate student working in the Walker Molecular Dynamics laboratory at the San Diego Supercomputer Center is a recipient of the 2012-2013 NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship Program award for his innovative molecular dynamics research using GPU computing. Benjamin Madej, a chemistry and biochemistry Ph.D. student at UC San Diego, will receive a $25,000 scholarship to further his research.
