Two years ago, racist incidents on and off campus sparked student demonstrations at UC San Diego resulting in an historic collaborative agreement that has strengthened our commitment to enhancing diversity. The protests, led by students and supported by faculty and staff, marked a tumultuous week and spurred visible changes at UC San Diego that allow students and others to better see themselves, their culture and their communities reflected on campus. When the ground shook in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Jan. 12, 2010, the magnitude-7 earthquake left behind an estimated 4,000 amputees.
Helping these victims has been a goal for a group of UC San Diego students who visited Haiti in 2011 to treat amputees using an innovative mirror-box therapy developed by V.S. Ramachandran, director of the Center for Brain and Cognition at UC San Diego.

Gazing into your lover’s eyes isn’t only romantic; it also releases a brain chemical called oxytocin that strengthens social bonds in a variety of species. For some people who suffer from depression, the so-called “hormone of love” might hold out hope. Researchers at the UC San Diego School of Medicine are conducting a clinical trial to study whether oxytocin – the brain hormone released with touches, hugs, or when a mother and her newborn baby bond – might help patients with depression.

A team of University of California, San Diego researchers has built the smallest room-temperature nanolaser to date, as well as an even more startling device: a highly efficient, “thresholdless” laser that funnels all its photons into lasing, without any waste.

Go Red Campaign
The UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center will be lit at night through the month of February to commemorate the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign, designed to draw attention to the fact that heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 killer of women in the United States – contributing to more deaths than the next three causes combined.

The University of California has begun a detailed analysis of hiring data to help pinpoint best practices for the recruitment and retention of female and under-represented minorities as faculty in its science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. Susan Carlson, vice provost for academic affairs, is one of four UC principal investigators to receive new grant funding from the National Science Foundation's ADVANCE Program, which seeks to increase faculty diversity.
