Huntington’s Disease Finding Named One of Top 100 Science Stories of Year by Discover Magazine

A potential therapy to treat Huntington’s disease and similar neurodegenerative conditions has been named one of the top 100 science stories of the year by Discover magazine. The report by Dr. Albert R. La Spada, chief of the Division of Genetics in the Department of Pediatrics in the UC San Diego School of Medicine, came in at No. 72. La Spada and colleagues identified a pair of proteins that clear away misfolded proteins that accumulate in the brains of Huntington’s patients. Read original story »

How Changes in Federal and State Tax Rates May Affect Your Paycheck

The new tax legislation that Congress approved Jan. 1, 2013 and President Obama recently signed may affect the 2013 federal income tax withholding on your paychecks. The new tax rates will be reflected in paychecks issued on or after Feb. 15. However, paychecks issued on or after Jan. 1 will reflect two other tax changes, including the employee share of OASDI (Social Security), which reverted from 4.2 percent to the historical rate of 6.2 percent on Jan. 1., and increases in 2012 California income tax rates for some earners due to passage in November of Proposition 30.
