Donors Invest to Make UC San Diego ‘Best Value’

UC San Diego was named a 2012 “best value” public college, according to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine. The national finance publication ranked UC San Diego 10th in the nation, up from 12th last year. The criteria used for the selection included cost and financial aid, average student debt, competitiveness, graduation rates and academic support. Despite increasing state budget cuts, UC San Diego has made the list for the last 10 years—in large part due to the still affordable tuition fees and financial aid packages that the university is able to provide for its students. Key to financial aid is scholarships created by the investment of generous university donors. Read More »

UC San Diego Athletics Honors Slain Volleyball Player at Memorial

The UC San Diego Athletics Department held a memorial in honor of former UCSD volleyball player Karen Reis Thursday evening at RIMAC Arena. Reis and her brother David, a U.S. Navy pilot, were killed in Coronado on New Year’s Day. University of California to Ban Smoking on All Campuses by 2014

The University of California plans to make all campuses tobacco-free by 2014. The new policy will prohibit the smoking and chewing of tobacco, as well as the sale of tobacco products, and will align with practices already in place at UC medical centers and other universities. Smoking will be prohibited on all areas of campus, including all outdoor spaces, parking lots and private residences. No designated smoking areas will be provided. The new policy was outlined in a letter from UC President Mark Yudof to the chancellors last week. Read More (PDF) »

New Program Helps UC Employees Ease into Retirement

The University of California has launched a new program that allows employees near the end of their careers to gradually transition into retirement and receive a cash incentive. Under the Phased Retirement Program, staff members who are 55 or older can reduce their work hours by at least 10 percent a year for up to three years before retiring. Employees will receive a lump sum payment upon retirement equal to half the amount they would have otherwise earned. Read More »
