Fifty percent of San Diego area college students admitted to sending text messages while driving on the freeway, according to a study released Tuesday from UC San Diego's Trauma Epidemiology and Injury Prevention Research Center. Nearly 80 percent of those surveyed admitted to talking or texting on a cell phone while driving.

It's not easy becoming an academic, particularly if you're a woman having to balance work and family life. But the recent sixth annual UC Diversity Pipeline Initiative conference made clear that the path is possible. The conference, which included participants from UC San Diego, encourages UC underrepresented female professional and graduate students to pursue academic careers in the health sciences. It supports those efforts with mentoring— both for the students and for the faculty conference speakers.

Two members of the UC San Diego faculty have won a Guggenheim Fellowship for 2012: Writer-performer Eileen Myles and economist James E. Rauch. Myles and Rauch join four others
from the University of California, among 181 scholars, artists and scientists from the U.S. and Canada, who have been named
Guggenheim fellows in the 88th annual competition. They were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants.
