UCSD Research Finds
Death Toll Climbs at Winter Holidays
More
Americans die from natural causes on
Christmas, the day after and New Year's
than on any other days of the year.
According to new research published
in the American Heart Association journal
Circulation, the 14-day holiday
period between Dec. 25 and Jan. 7 shows
a spike in death rates significantly
above what would be expected for the
winter season. The likely culprit: Delays
in seeking necessary medical treatment.

How
to Get Your Holiday
Shopping Done During Your Lunch Break
This
year, instead of trekking to the mall
during the weekends, get all of your
shopping done during your lunch break
-- without leaving UCSD. The university
has lots of great shopping resources,
sans the long lines and fighting for
a parking spot (for the most part.)
Here are some suggestions for everyone
on your list.

Regents
Adopt Budget Proposal
with Good News for Faculty and Staff
Last
month, the University of California
Board of Regents adopted a state budget
proposal for 2005-06 that, if accepted,
would offer some good news to faculty
and staff. Budget highlights include
money for merit pay and cost of living
adjustments for faculty and staff, which
UCSD hasn’t seen for two years.
In addition, there will be some funding
for new space, which UCSD also hasn’t
received in a few years. The budget
also includes funds for enrollment growth.
The flip side of all this good news
is that student fees will increase.

How to Put Happiness Back Into your Holidays
The holidays can be a wonderful time filled with excitement, love, ritual and precious moments shared with family and friends. However, the holidays can also represent a difficult period of stress. When added to the normal strains of daily life, the pressures of buying gifts, fighting traffic, dealing with grief and loss, and awkward family gatherings following a divorce or separation can diminish the joy and peacefulness of the season. More

Deck the Halls — Safely
Festive decorations in the workplace add to the joy of the holiday season. But
improper use can result in fires or electrical accidents. Follow these
guidelines for safe holiday decorating at UCSD. More

Abstract Art in the Late Twentieth Century
Francis Colpitt
These essays on abstract painting by eleven of its most incisive critics trace the development of such critical issues as hard-edge painting, deductive and serial structure, monochrome abstraction, the psychological analogy, regionalism, and the "death of painting" in Postmodernism. The introduction and commentary by Frances Colpitt situates the essays historically and examines their philosophical sources and influences, from formalism and phenomenology to structuralism and poststructuralism. It is a coherent and optimistic picture of abstract painting -- the definitive contribution of modern art. More
