S.F Mayor Gavin Newsom
Defends Stance on Same-Sex Marriage
Maverick
Democrat Compares Issue to Civil Rights
Struggle
A capacity crowd at RIMAC Arena witnessed a rare spectacle on Monday night: an elected official who revels in being a pariah and shrugs off his dim political prospects. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, delivering this year's DeWitt Higgs Memorial Lecture, discussed the continuing furor over his 2003 decision to grant marriage licenses to more than 4,000 same-sex couples. UCSD Healthcare Employees Really Lose It
In
February, UCSD clinical nutritionists
put out a question to all UCSD Healthcare
employees -- "Who is the Biggest Loser?"
In
recognition of National Nutrition
Month in March, the clinical nutrition
department devised a safe weight loss
competition amongst employees. To
recruit volunteers, they sent out
an email looking for volunteers to
join a monthlong contest. Dozens applied
and, ultimately, the registered dietitians
chose 10 people to participate on
two teams. Participants had to agree
to meet weekly with assigned dietitians,
follow dietary advice, and exercise.

Principles of
Lasers and Optics
William S. C. Chang
This book describes the fundamental principles of the laser and the propagation of laser radiation in bulk and guided wave components. All solid state, gas, and semiconductor lasers are analyzed as macroscopic devices with susceptibility originating from quantum mechanical interactions. Additional analysis of the unique properties of coherent laser light in optical components is derived from fundamental principles. More |
