Engineering Students Combine
Mechanics and Acting on Reality TV Show
At
least seven UCSD engineering students
and one alumnus will appear in a 13-part
reality series on the Animal Planet
Network called Chasing Nature.
The series debuted in early December
and is scheduled to continue through
early 2006. The series, which was filmed
in Australia, features students from
top engineering schools in the United
States who are challenged to use academic
training and practical experience to
recreate animal behaviors.

“Celebrating a Decade of Genome Sequencing,” a one-day symposium held Tuesday in the Price Center Ballroom, brought together leaders in the field of genomics from around the world. About 750 faculty, students and local scientists were on hand to listen as two Nobel Prize winners, Dr. Hamilton Smith of the J. Craig Venter Institute, and Dr. Sydney Brenner from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, began and ended the all-day program. More |

Preuss School Seniors Win $1,000 Grant for
Class Project Creating Students for Organ Donations
Six
seniors at the Preuss School have teamed
up to form Students for Organ Donations,
the first West Coast high school chapter
and one of only four in the country
whose mission is to educate about organ
donation and rally possible donors.
For their efforts, the students have
been selected to receive the State Farm
Good Neighbor Service-Learning Award,
administered by Youth Service America
and funded by State Farm. More

Young Scholars Competition at the "Amazing
Light: Visions for Discovery" symposium
this month at the University of California,

honoring Nobel laureate Charles Townes'
90th birthday was intended to recognize
young scientists from around the world
with the potential to make such major
breakthroughs as Townes' discovery of

Professor Elected to American Physical
Society
Physics Professor Dimitri Basov has
been elected a fellow of the American
Physical Society (2005) . Basov was
cited by the society "For his significant
contributions to our understanding of
high temperature superconductors and
other correlated electron systems using
infrared and optical spectroscopy."
He will be formally presented with his
fellowship certificate at the next annual
meeting of the society's Division of
Condensed Matter Physics. |
