UCSD Graduates 100,000th
Student During Weekend Ceremonies
Alma Kim and her parents
marched into commencement
ceremonies Saturday for
the 1,100 members of Thurgood
Marshall College class
of '05 and filed into
the center section, fourth
row, seats 5, 6 and 7.
Taped under the seat of
one of those chairs was
a UCSD Alumni Association
license holder with the
designation "100,000th
graduate" and, much to
her surprise, Alma soon
found herself up on the
stage and in the spotlight. More

Fieldworkers
on the Frontera
Twenty-one
UCSD undergraduates journeyed south
of the border in January to learn firsthand
what brings untold numbers of Mexican
migrants north. Led by professor Wayne
Cornelius, director of the Center for
Comparative Immigration Studies, the
students were founding participants
in the field research track of a new

Art of Deception
The
lacey scorpionfish blends so perfectly
into its seagrass and seaweed environment
that it appears as a sculptured artifact,
a relic of the sea, and the California
halibut snuggles on the ocean's sandy
bottom so flatly it becomes a part of
it's surface. These
are just two creatures in a cast of
at least 40 species starring - but seemingly
"behind and the scenes" - in the newly
opened exhibition, The Art of Deception,
at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.

Campus LEAD Center Helps
Students Get Involved, Develop 'The
Whole Person'
For
William S. Howe, students should experience
far more than classrooms and reference
shelves during their academic careers.
They should also learn leadership, engagement,
activism and development - LEAD, in
short - and as director of the new LEAD
Center on campus, Howe does his best
to make that possible.

Outgoing Seniors Develop Multiplayer,
Online Videogames For Software Design Course
Computer science students don't usually draw a crowd of onlookers for their final exam. But the nearly three dozen seniors who took CSE 125 this quarter drew a standing-room-only crowd in Peterson Hall on June 3, as fellow students, faculty and bystanders packed the auditorium to watch - and even play - five online videogames created by the students from scratch.
