By Malinda Danziger I May 2, 2005
Spring cleaning on your mind? Do you have bicycles, scrap metal, wood, appliances, furniture or wheels piled up in your garage or backyard shed? Donate your junk and support the second annual Triton Junkyard Derby, a boxcar race, scheduled for Friday, May 13 during the Sun God Festival.
Based on the popular "Junkyard Wars," on The Learning Channel (TLC), competitors have only two days to scour the "UCSD junkyard" for materials to build the perfect boxcar. or anything capable of making it to the finish line!
Your donated treasures will help to fill the junkyard with boxcar building parts to support our 16 Derby teams! If you would like to schedule a pick up, please contact the Triton Engineering Student Council (TESC) representative Chris Stead at cstead@ucsd.edu or the UCSD Alumni Association at (858) 534-3900.
Cheering crowds are also needed! Nearly 1,000 spectators turned up last year so come watch the Triton Junkyard Derby on Friday, May 13 starting at 11:30 a.m. as students, alumni, staff and faculty test the laws of physics and mechanics in round-robin style races down Peterson Hall Hill. Last year's champion, Team Darkside, will be returning as alumni to defend their title.
The Triton Junkyard Derby is presented by the UCSD Alumni Association and Triton Engineering Student Council. More information is available online at www.alumni.ucsd.edu/derby/.
