Sons and Daughters of Staff Take
On Acting, Crafts, Computers and More
They were no more than five minutes into the workshop when mothers and daughters and mothers and sons - each duo a stranger to the other - were showing their favorite dance step, or improvising one, then copying the steps of each other. They mimicked a ballerina and a swimmer, did a twist, a twirl, the hula, an indescribable shake, and an I-don't-have-a-favorite-dance shrug step and many others. And this was just the warm-up.

 Where young Marines once sharpened their rifle skills, UCSD students will soon find services to help them improve their academic performance. Ground was broken on Monday, April 25, for the new Student Academic Services Facility, which will replace the World War II-era barracks now nestled among the eucalyptus and palm trees of central campus. The Reynolds Collection at the Library of Congress has a new worldwide address: http://loc.gov/rogerreynolds. Devoted to the work of composer and UCSD music professor Roger Reynolds, the multimedia website was inaugurated with a special Library event, held in Washington, D.C., on April 25.

Role In Stopping Bacterial-Induced Inflammation

findings that could have implications
for autoimmune disorders and drug-resistant
bacterial infections, researchers at
the School of Medicine have identified
a key protein involved in the appropriate
shutdown of inflammation following an
immune response to invading pathogens.

Pharmaceutical Researcher Awarded
Scholarship to Rady School FlexMBA Program
The
Rady School of Management has named
Hui Cai as the recipient of the 2005
DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary-Athena FlexMBA
Scholarship. Cai is a senior scientist
at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical
Research and Development in La Jolla,
working on small molecule drug discovery
programs targeting diseases of the immune
system.

FlexMBA Students Excel Outside
of the Classroom- and On the Race Track
 Steve Gerken, a member of The Rady School of Management FlexMBA class of 2006, raced his 1993 Porsche RS America on April 9 in the four-hour Tribute to LeMans Enduro race at the California Speedway. Gerken raced at speeds of more than 150 miles per hour over the course of more than 300 miles. In typical Rady School fashion, Gerken and his co-driver won "First in Class," which placed them 11th out of 29 cars in the race. A group of fellow FlexMBA students attended the race to cheer Gerken on. |

David Antin
In this series of intricately related texts, internationally known poet, critic, and performance artist David Antin explores the experience of time--how it's felt, remembered, and recounted. These free-form talk pieces — sometimes called talk poems or simply talks — began as improvisations at museums, universities, and poetry centers where Antin was invited to come and think out loud.
Serious and playful, they move rapidly from keen analysis to powerful storytelling to passages of pure comedy, as they range kaleidoscopically across Antin's experiences: in the New York City of his childhood and youth, the Eastern Europe of family and friends, and the New York and Southern California of his art and literary career.
