Introducing the Center for
Earth Observations and Applications
October 10, 2005
This year, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox committed five years of start-up funding for a center to stimulate and coordinate Earth observation research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and UCSD. The Scripps-based Center for Earth Observations and Applications (CEOA) will work toward creating an integrated approach to Earth observations by fostering increased collaboration between researchers at Scripps, the School of Medicine, the general campus, and outside institutions. With the goal of providing infrastructure to promote the pursuit of multi-disciplinary research, CEOA is surveying faculty and staff to learn how best to structure the center to meet their needs. This may include the creation of an engineering and technical personnel pool, provision of support for preparation of large proposals, a staff lecture series, and more. An inaugural symposium, "Science and Technology in Global Earth Observing System of Systems: the Role of Universities," will be held at the new Calit2 building on the upper campus on Nov 20-22 -- all those interested are welcome to attend. For more information about CEOA, please visit http://www.ceoa.ucsd.edu.
