Walk-in Depression Screenings Offered

October 17, 2005

During the month of October, the UCSD Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) is inviting faculty, staff, their partners and dependents to drop in for a free depression screening. The 15-question screen is available in English and Spanish and takes about five minutes to complete. It will be followed by a 15-minute review and assessment by an FSAP counselor, at which point the counselor may make arrangements for a follow-up visit.

What is depression? Unlike normal experiences of sadness, clinical depression is characterized by a state of intense, enduring feelings of despair, hopelessness and helplessness that interferes with everyday functions and causes people to lose pleasure in life.

What causes depression? Depression may be related to many factors including physiology, physical health and heredity combined with environmental factors.

What are the symptoms of depression? Symptoms of depression may include decreased energy, loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, trouble sleeping, and appetite or weight changes among others. However, it is important to note that many people with depression may not exhibit any of these obvious symptoms.

Why screen for depression? By taking a positive step towards identifying their depression, individuals can improve their quality of life with appropriate treatment.

Where do I go? The FSAP office is located at:
Suite 406
Torrey Pines Center South
10280 N. Torrey Pines Road

Walk-in depression screenings will be conducted from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during the month of October. Individuals can call (858) 534-5523 at any time to make an appointment with an FSAP counselor.
