Scripps Researchers Rediscover
Elusive Site Of Exploding Volcanic Rocks
 Scientists aboard the Scripps research vessel Roger Revelle this week solved a 45-year-old geological mystery. In 1960, Scripps oceanographer Dale Krause reported the discovery of extraordinary deep-sea volcanic rocks in waters off Mexico, near Guadalupe Island, approximately 200 miles south of San Diego. When brought to the surface, the rocks spontaneously exploded "with a sharp snapping sound," according to Krause. More |

California Ocean Protection Council Meets at Scripps
 Chancellor Marye Anne Fox met with (L to R) Assemblymember Pedro Nava, Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante, California Resources Agency Secretary Mike Chrisman, and California EPA Secretary Alan Lloyd at Scripps Institution of Oceanographyduring the Sept. 23 meeting of the California Ocean Protection Council. It was the third meeting of California's new ocean and coastal policy board, and the first in Southern California.
