Aaron Thode, an associate research scientist in the Marine Physical Laboratory at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, has been selected among the nation's "brightest young engineers" to participate in the National Academy of Engineering's (NAE) 11th annual Frontiers of Engineering symposium.

The symposium will be held Sept. 22-24 at the GE Global Research Center in Niskayuna, NY, and will explore aspects of ID and verification technologies, the engineering of complex systems, engineering for developing communities, and energy.

Participants from industry, academia, and government are nominated by fellow engineers or by organizations and must be between the ages of 30-45. NAE selects the most outstanding nominees, who are performing "cutting-edge engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines," for participation in the symposium.

"Frontiers of Engineering provides an opportunity for engineers to learn about techniques and challenges in areas other than their own," said NAE President Wm. A. Wulf. "This new knowledge can spark insights and collaborations that might not have occurred otherwise."

Thode specializes in marine mammal acoustics, advanced acoustic signal processing, and geoacoustic imaging, inversion, and tomography. He received his Ph.D. in oceanography from Scripps in 1999, conducted postdoctoral work at MIT, then returned to Scripps as a researcher 2002.
