Students Urged to Cut
'Waste' Size at Earth Day Celebration
They tie-dyed T-shirts. They sampled organic tea, coffee and chocolate. They even tried to understand what biodiesel is. Scores of students stopped by the Sun God Lawn Thursday to celebrate Earth Day at UCSD. About 30 organizations were waiting for them, eager to help them learn how to better preserve the environment. Students, staff and members of community organizations had set up booths, with brochures and products for sale or for sampling. More |

Former Quarterback Questions Masculinity Stereotypes and How They Can Foster Violence Against Women
 What does it mean to be a man? Why do little boys get so upset when you tell them they throw like a girl? And how does this kind of language lead to violence against women? Former NFL quarterback Don McPherson tried to answer these questions, and more, Tuesday night at UCSD. Freshman Admissions Up Nearly 20 Percent
UCSD has admitted 21,305 freshmen for the Fall 2006 and Winter 2007 quarters, up 3,514 students for a 19.8 percent increase from the previous year. The admitted UCSD students were selected from a total 43,579 freshmen applications, with 20,018 admitted for the Fall 2006 quarter and 1,287 for the Winter 2007 quarter. UCSD received the second most freshmen applications in the UC system, after UCLA. More |

Composers working in the genre known as “new music” usually don’t have the benefit of big record sales or concert revenues. The music has grown over the past century mainly through the support of patrons who are committed to music outside the mainstream. One of the most prolific of these patrons is Betty Freeman, who has commissioned hundreds of pieces by dozens of composers including John Adams, Harrison Birtwistle, John Cage, Philip Glass, and Lou Harrison.
