Record Number Turn Out for Staff Appreciation Picnic
They ate chicken teriyaki and burgers. They drank lemonade and ice tea. Some even nibbled on funnel cakes. A record number of staff members turned out for this year's Staff Appreciation Picnic on the Sun God Lawn. In all, 2,594 people signed up for the event, but about 3,000 actually turned out, outgoing Staff Association Chair Ken Tomory estimated. More arrow

With populations increasing around the globe in recent decades, no one would be surprised by an increase in the amount of noise produced in terrestrial environments. Now, a study involving researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography has shown that the underwater world also is becoming a noisier place, with unknown effects on marine life. More arrow

The Rady School of Management held its first-ever graduation ceremony Sunday to confer Master’s of Business Administration degrees upon the school’s inaugural class. This group of 58 men and women joined the Rady School’s FlexMBA program for working professionals in September 2004. More arrow

San Diego Consortium for Latin American Studies at UCSD Granted $2.2 Million for Language and Area Work
The San Diego Consortium for Latin American Studies, a partnership between the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies (CILAS) at UCSD and the Center for Latin American Studies at San Diego State University, has been awarded a $2.2 million grant for research in foreign area studies and language training. $700,000 Grant of Fujitsu Computer Technology

Marco Estrada "couldn't believe it" when he learned recently that he and other incoming freshmen participating in the Summer Bridge academic support and leadership development program at UCSD would be receiving a brand new tablet laptop computer, printer and accessories to use during the time they are enrolled, thanks to a $700,000 grant of Fujitsu technology products and services. Science Dean Has Minor Planet Named After Him
Mark Thiemens has spent an entire career studying and analyzing meteorites, chunks of space rock that survive the fiery plunge through Earth's atmosphere. Now he has an orbiting space rock-an asteroid or "minor planet"-to call his very own. More arrow

Music Grad Starts San Diego's
First Community Music Center

Fiona Chatwin completed a doctoral degree in music at UCSD in June and has already started her own music school. In July, Chatwin's Villa Musica hosted a five-day pilot music camp at UCSD attended by 16 aspiring vocalists ages 11 to 18. More arrow

Cognitive Scientist Wins $100k Rumelhart Prize
Psycholinguistics and artificial neural networks pioneer Jeff Elman - distinguished professor of cognitive science at UCSD and acting dean of the Division of Social Sciences - has been named the seventh recipient of the David E. Rumelhart Prize. More arrow

Polarized America:
The Dance of Ideology and Unequal Riches

The idea of America as politically polarized--that there is an unbridgeable divide between right and left, red and blue states--has become a cliché. What commentators miss, however, is that increasing polarization in recent decades has been closely accompanied by fundamental social and economic changes--most notably, a parallel rise in income inequality. In Polarized America, Nolan McCarty, UCSD political scientist Keith Poole, and Howard Rosenthal examine the relationships of polarization, wealth disparity, immigration, and other forces, characterizing it as a dance of give and take and back and forth causality.
