The UCSD Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research
Center will be part of the five-year, $60 million

Sound of Waves Inspires Winning Orchestral Score
Since she came to La Jolla in 2000, Yumiko Morita, a graduate student in music, has often listened to the ocean. Over time, music began forming in her mind, tentatively capturing the essence of the sound of the waves. “Echoes of a Wave” was born. This weekend, Morita got a chance to hear her piece performed by a full orchestra for the first time at Mandeville Auditorium. More |

Off the Record: the Use and Misuse
of Anonymous Sources in the Media
It
has been one of the biggest legal fights between the
judiciary, the press and the White House this year
and it led to the indictment of Vice President Dick
Cheney’s chief of staff. Now, members of the
San Diego and UCSD communities will have a chance
to hear a first-hand account of this battle from one
of its key players.Norman Pearlstine, who served as
editor-in-chief of Time Inc. for 11 years, will give
a talk at UCSD entitled “Off the Record:
the Use and Misuse of Anonymous Sources in the Media.”

Antidepressant Use in Late Pregnancy May
Affect Fetus
Researchers found an increased risk of persistent
pulmonary hypertension in newborns of mothers who
used certain commonly prescribed antidepressants in
late pregnancy. The results of the study will be published
in the February 9 issue of the New England Journal
of Medicine. More

Information Theory and
Applications Center Inaugurated in Calit2
UCSD
has created a new research center to explore and apply
the basic theory that underpins the digital revolution.
The Information Theory and Applications Center will
study the fundamentals of information theory and develop
related applications in communications, computer science,
bioinformatics, statistics, finance and other disciplines.

Camp Program Awarded Fellowship
from
National Science Foundation for Graduate Students
The
National Science Foundation has awarded the California
Alliance for Minority Participation in Science, Engineering
and Mathematics Program (CAMP) at UCSD with a $972,000
fellowship to fund 12 graduate students who will be
pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees. More |
