It has been one of the biggest legal fights between the judiciary, the press and the White House this year and it led to the indictment of Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff.
Now, members of the San Diego and UCSD communities will have a chance to hear a first-hand account of this battle from one of its key players.Norman Pearlstine, Time Inc.’s former editor-in-chief for 11 years, will give a talk at UCSD entitled “Off the Record: the Use and Misuse of Anonymous Sources in the Media.”
“No other working journalist exercises such leadership and influence in this era of holy wars and legal turmoil as Time Inc.’s editor-in-chief, Norman Pearlstine,” said Mary Walshok, associate vice-chancellor of Extended Studies and Public Programs. “Having Norman speak to our campus and our community couldn’t be timelier.”
Pearlstine was responsible for Time Inc.’s decision to turn over subpoenaed records to a grand jury during the investigation into the leaking of Valerie Plame’s identity to reporters. Plame was a covert CIA agent, and the wife of Joseph Wilson, a former diplomat and a vocal critic of the Bush administrations’ claims about intelligence regarding Iraq’s nuclear capabilities.
"The Valerie Plame case led to the most difficult decision I have had to make in my 37 years working as an editor and reporter,” Pearlstine said. “But it taught me a lot about how anonymous and confidential sources have been used and misused, leading to some of our best and worst journalism.”
Pearlstine’s talk is part of the Helen Edison Lecture Series, the result of a major gift from the late Helen Edison, a prominent San Diego philanthropist.
