Preuss School senior Kelly Diep .

Kelly Diep, 17, a senior at the Preuss School, has been named a National Merit Finalist and now becomes eligible to be selected as a National Merit Scholar. She is the first in the charter school to be selected for the honor.

Kelly was named a finalist on the basis of her outstanding academic achievements and her leadership roles at school, including president of the Model United Nations Club, Senior Class president, and captain of the Preuss Spirit Squad. Additionally, she has created a nonprofit foundation to provide SAT prep courses, counseling, encouragement and support to homeless teenagers who are striving to go to college. Kelly collects and distributes information about scholarships and college programs, writes SAT prep material, solicits donations, recruits fellow volunteers, and spends hours tutoring and providing peer support to homeless teens.

Harvard College has admitted her to its fall class under the early action program.

A total of 8,500 merit scholarships will be awarded out of the finalist pool of 16,000.
