Put Students at Center of Storm
Hurricane Katrina had devastated the Gulf Coast. Harriet Miers' Supreme Court nomination was in trouble. President Bush's approval ratings were at an all time low in some polls.

UCSD and Venter Institute Receive $24.5
Million Grant to Advance Metagenomics Research
Researchers at UCSD will build a state-of-the-art computational resource and develop software tools to decipher the genetic code of communities of microbial life in the world’s oceans. The new resource will help scientists understand how microbes function in their natural ecosystems, enable studies on the effect humans are having on the environment, as well as permit insight into the evolution of life on Earth. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance issued its yearly rankings today identifying the top 100 values in public colleges. The University of California, San Diego ranks 11 th in the nation for offering a “first-class education at bargain prices,” said the magazine. More |

Shiley Eye Center Complex Set to Expand
UCSD
has secured commitments of $8.1 million
in private support for a much-needed
expansion of the Shiley Eye Center and
the Anne F. and Abraham Ratner Children's
Eye Center. The Shiley Eye Center, which
has grown steadily since the department
was founded just 20 years ago, had over
55,000 patient visits in 2004. More |

Specialists
They
came to UCSD from 18 countries around
the world, mostly young, government
and university specialists in national
security policy. They are here for a
six-week program, called “U.S.
National Security Policymaking in a
Post 9/11 World,” directed by
IRPS Dean Peter Cowhey and Professor
Susan Shirk, and funded by the U.S.
Department of State with the goal of
providing insight into American policymaking.

Meet with Advisers to Board of Regents
If you're a staff member and want to talk to someone who has the ear of UC Regents, here's your chance.
The two staff advisers to the UC Board of Regents will meet with employees from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday morning at the Faculty Club, at the end of a visit to the UCSD campus. The adviser positions were created last year as part of a pilot program. They were filled for the first time this academic year. David Miller and David Bell sit on two committees but don't have the power to vote. More |
