Scientists to Study Coral Reefs Worldwide:
Marine Scientists Going Down for the Count
Three
world-class oceanographic research institutions
have announced a collaboration to conduct
a global census of coral reef ecosystems
aimed at estimating the numbers of reef
species and determining their vulnerability
to human stressors. Scientists at Scripps
Institution of Oceanography, the Australian
Institute of Marine Science and the
Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center
of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration will participate in this
unprecedented global census of coral
reefs, one of 17 projects of the Census
of Marine Life, a global network of
researchers in more than 70 nations
engaged in a 10-year initiative to assess
and explain the diversity, distribution
and abundance of marine life in the
ocean.

Bridging
the Language Gap
They're there when a loved one has cancer and has run out of options; during a high-risk pregnancy and at the end of a hospital stay.
UCSD's interpreters are called upon every day to help in difficult situations, which become even tougher when patients and their doctors don't speak the same language. More |

Tiger
Woods
in
the Neighborhood
Golf
fans at UCSD received a rare treat last
week as Tiger Woods and other golf celebrities
took part in the Buick Invitational
tournament at the Torrey Pines golf
course. Some employees took their lunch
break by the fence to get a better look
at the players. Others took a few minutes
out of their day to take pictures of
Woods. Network Administrator Jason Almazan
stood up by the golf course fence at
9 a.m. Wednesday and snapped away as
Woods played a few strokes and answered
reporters' questions. Woods went on
to win his fourth Buick title. |

Diversity
Matters in Tropical Forests
An
analysis of seven tropical forests around
the world indicates that nature encourages
diversity by selecting for less common
trees as the trees mature. The landmark
study, which was conducted by 33 ecologists
from 12 countries and published in the
January 27 issue of the journal Science,
conclusively demonstrates that diversity
matters and has ecological importance
to tropical forests.
