A group of UCSD students will take a look at both sides of the Mt. Soledad cross controversy this month on UCSD-TV.
During a one-hour program airing through July, including at 9 p.m. today, titled "Separating Church & State: The Mt. Soledad Cross Debate," students enrolled in a UCSD communications class will visit the Mt. Soledad National War Memorial in La Jolla. They also will hear from cross opponent and civil liberties attorney Jim McElroy and from cross supporter and Christian rights attorney Teresa Mendoza. Then students will decide for themselves whether the landmark cross violates the constitutionally mandated separation of church and state.
The program premiers at 8 p.m. on July 3 and will
repeat throughout the month. The program aims to go
beyond the headlines and sound bites surrounding the
ongoing Mt. Soledad cross controversy. Students featured
on the program were enrolled in “Culture Wars:
The Evolution Debate,” a UCSD communications
class. Ariana Hernandez-Reguant, who teaches communications
at UCSD, said she developed the class to encourage
students to become critical thinkers and carefully
examine all arguments before coming to conclusions.
