for Annual “UC Day 2006” with Local Legislators
By Malinda Danziger | March 13, 2006
Seventeen UCSD alumni and two UCSD students were
joined by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox in Sacramento
Wednesady to meet San Diego area legislators and bring
a message of the University’s importance to
the state.
The UCSD delegation joined others from all 10 UC campuses to articulate the University’s priorities to state legislators during the annual “UC Day” in the capitol.
Acting as legislative advocates, the volunteer group met with Assembly members Shirley Horton, Jay LaSuer, George Plescia, Lori Saldana, Juan Vargas, Mark Wyland and Senators Denise Moreno Ducheny and Christine Kehoe.
Alumni representing UCSD were Mark Bernard, ’79; David Boadita, ’05; Henry DeVries, ’79, Alumni Association Board president; Hugo Garcia, ’02; Donald Eigler, ’75, ’84; Jeff Fenton, ’80; Christian-Helena Peterson, ’03; Michelle Hu, ’98; Kari Middleton, ’97; Clinton Quan, ’97; Alex Schafgans, ’05; Steve Schreiner, ’80, UCSD Alumni Regent; Marion Weiler, ’73; Rachel YorkWilliams, ’71, ’78; Brian Walsh, ’89, Gary Wollberg, ’80; and Matt Xavier, ’84, and student delegates Ian Clark, ’08 and Jared Feldman, ’06. Others in the local contingent were Lourdes Jimenez, Dave Schroeder and Mark Wittenberg, Government and Community Relations; John Valva and Jocelyn Wyndham, UCSD Alumni Association.
Delegates brought the message to legislators that UC’s contribution to California extends far beyond classroom walls and campus boundaries. Every day, they noted, UC:
- Makes a major difference to California and helps meet the state’s changing needs by providing a world-class education to students and a constant stream of technological and intellectual innovations to help keep California’s economy strong.
- Is a leading health care provider for California, offering care by some of the best people in the world and services for many of the state’s poor and uninsured.
- Education and research have helped give California its creative, dynamic, and entrepreneurial spirit – and UC’s programs, from the arts to K-12, enrich California’s communities every day
