Children of Employees Get Glimpse of Campus at Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day
They pretended to be an alien with four heads and one body. They climbed rocks. They even got fingerprinted. Dozens of boys and girls descended upon UCSD Thursday to spend the day with their parents and celebrate Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. The goal of the event is to get children and parents to think about careers and their future, according to the Women’s Center, which organized the event. More |

LGBT Center to Hold Grand Opening
 In the past few years, UCSD’s LGBT Resource Center went from employing one part-time intern to one graduate and eight undergraduate interns. It went from 300 square feet to 960 square feet of space near the Gilman parking structure. Now, the center is taking a new leap, to a new 2700-square-foot building and a prominent location near Mandeville Center. This new building is the largest LGBT resource center on any public American college campus, officials said. More |

An Evening with Maya Angelou 
Maya Angelou, renowned poet, author and activist, will speak Saturday at UCSD about her work, her life and her times. Angelou’s talk will take place at 8 p.m. at the RIMAC Arena. It is sponsored by AS Programming and the Office of Diversity at UCSD, both divisions of ASUCSD and the Student Life department. More |
UCSD employees got a blast from the past during “Fun Times at Triton High: Second Chance Prom” last week at the Price Center Ballroom. The lunch and dance was part of a series of staff appreciation events that took place on campus last week. For those who didn’t want to go relive high school all over again, the university also offered two barbecues, a breakfast and Polynesian-themed meal. Staff members also got free admission to the Birch Aquarium on Wednesday. |

Academic Senate OKs Committee Slate, Revisions to Scholarship-Integrity Policy
The UCSD Academic Senate met on Tuesday, and hearing from guest speakers, agreed to approve a slate of candidates for the Committee of Committees, as well as okay changes to the university’s policy on integrity of scholarship.

Valuing Oil Spill Prevention: A Case Study of California's Central Coast
"This volume describes what is arguably the first and only valuation study to meet in full the reference study standards set by NOAA's Blue Ribbon Panel on Contingent Valuation. This book documents a contingent valuation study for a generic environmental good: preventing the likely injuries from oil spills on the coast of Central California. It provides a wealth of materials which will reduce the long lead time which characterizes most economic damage assessments. This is achieved by so richly documenting the design, administration, and analysis of such studies as to be effectively a 'how-to' guide for undertaking state-of-the-art contingent valuation studies. The book is supported by a CD-ROM containing a wealth of additional material, including data, questionnaires, and transcripts.
