"Social Justice and Stem Cell Research: Who Gains? Who Loses?" was the topic of a Saturday, May 13 conference at UCSD attended by more than 200

Pictured, at left above, is Michael Kalichman, UCSD health sciences professor of pathology and co-director of the San Diego Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, one of two main sponsors of the event. Above center, is Mary Blair-Loy, UCSD associate professor of sociology and advisor to the Episcopal Student Association, the other co-sponsor of the conference. With them is John Evans, UCSD associate professor of sociology, one of four main presenters who addressed diverse aspects of stem cell ethics. In subsequent small group discussions, participants discussed many different views on the topic but there was agreement that an informed society should set ethical goals, toward which science should work. Participants were welcomed to UCSD by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. |

HP Technology for Teaching Grant
Faculty and students from
the Jacobs School of Engineering will benefit from a 2006 HP Technology for Teaching grant designed to transform and improve learning in the classroom through innovative uses of technology. The gift to the Computer Scince and Engineering department will provide an award package of wireless equipment and other HP products as well as a faculty stipend. More |
