What’s new this academic year? This Week@UCSD is taking a quick look at what’s in store for different areas of campus. Here’ is a short list of some of the new buildings that have opened or will pop up on campus throughout the year.

• The $17 million expansion and renovation of the Biomedical Library was dedicated on Sept. 14. The library supports the School of Medicine, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, UCSD Healthcare, and the Division of Biological Sciences. Its collection of approximately 200,000 bound volumes and approximately 2,550 current journal subscriptions covers the fields of medicine and biology. The Biomedical Library has doubled in size and increased seating from about 200 to well over 600. The new building also includes a 24-hour study facility for graduate and professional students; three library classrooms; 14 group-study rooms; a presentation practice room and an information commons of 80 computers where students can consult sources and create papers and presentations.

• Coming in April 2007: the $35 million Student Academic Services Center, located in the heart of the campus — a one stop-shop for student services, including financial aid and the Registrar. Designed by renowned architect Rob Quigley, it will include restaurants, convenience stores and other services. The 102,000-square-foot, five-story structure replaces a number of World War II Camp Matthews barracks buildings.

East Campus Graduate Housing

• Coming in April 2007: East Campus Graduate Housing project, with accommodations for about 800 graduate students with about 800 parking spots. It carries a price tag of $78 million.

• Coming in August 2007: the Hopkins Parking Structure, located near RIMAC Field. The six-level structure, with 1440 parking spots, carries a $30.6 million price tag.
  It will feature improved security, including cameras and gates.

• Other projects include Phase 1 of the $43.5 million Rady School of Management facility and the expansion and renovation of the Faculty Club, expected to be completed in December, although dining service will begin Sept. 18
