October
16, 2006 What’s new this academic year? This Week@UCSD is taking a quick look at what’s in store for
different areas of campus. Here is a short list of
new appointments, transfers and promotions announced
during the past few months for key administrative
and academic positions.
Vice Chancellors:
- David N. Bailey became Interim Vice
Chancellor of Health Sciences and Interim Dean of
the School of Medicine on Oct. 1. Bailey served
as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and
stepped in after Vice Chancellor Ed Holmes left
for the Agency for Science, Technology and Research
in Singapore and the National University of Singapore.

- Keith E. Brant became Vice Chancellor
for External Relations on Sept. 1. Brant, formerly
UCLA's Assistant Vice Chancellor for Alumni Relations
and executive director of the UCLA Alumni Association,
is working to attract private financial support
to the university, strengthen UCSD’s relationships
with alumni and other supporters, and build UCSD’s
reputation in the region and beyond. Click here

- Senior Vice Chancellor Marsha Chandler
announced that she will be stepping down from her
position at the end of this academic year. She served
in that position since coming to UCSD in 1997. Chandler,
who is a professor at the Graduate School of International
Relations and Pacific Studies and the department
of political science, will remain on the UCSD faculty.
A national search will be initiated this fall for
her successor.
- Arthur B. Ellis joined UCSD on Sept. 1 as the Vice Chancellor for Research.
Ellis comes to UCSD from the National Science Foundation, where he served as the director for the Division of Chemistry.
He is an internationally recognized chemist and is widely known for his leadership in advancing the mission of research
in the university to create and communicate new knowledge.

- A.D.J. "Tony" Haymet became
Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences, director of
the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Dean
of the Graduate School of Marine Sciences on Sept.
12. Haymet is a highly distinguished researcher
who comes to UCSD from the Commonwealth Scientific
and Industrial Research Organization, Australia's
national science agency and one of the largest and
most diverse research agencies in the world. Haymet
replaces Charles Kennel, who will lead UCSD’s
Environment and Sustainability Initiative. More

- John Woods, Vice Chancellor for Resource Management & Planning, announced his retirement effective Dec. 31.
He began his career at UCSD as Associate Vice Chancellor for Resource Management in 1982 and has served in his current capacity since 1993.
A national search will be conducted for his successor.
Other positions:
- Kim Barrett became Dean of Graduate
Studies on Sept. 1. Barrett is an internationally
recognized physiologist, well known for her research
in gastrointestinal epithelial transport and function.
She joined the UCSD School of Medicine faculty in
1985. More

- Glynda J. Davis of the Student Affairs Office in the Jacobs School of Engineering has joined the
UCSD Chancellor’s Office staff as director of Campus Diversity Initiatives.
Davis works with Associate Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer Jorge Huerta developing
and implementing diversity activities to benefit campus students, faculty, and staff.

- Shu Chien has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Y.C. Fung Endowed Chair in Bioengineering
at the Jacobs School of Engineering. Chien, director of the UCSD Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering and
former chair of the Jacobs School of Engineering’s Department of Bioengineering, is a world leader in understanding
how blood flow and pressure affect blood vessels. More >>
- Lawrence S.B. Goldstein, professor
in the department of cellular & molecular medicine
at the UCSD School of Medicine and Howard Hughes
Medical Institute Investigator, has been named director
of the UCSD’s Stem Cell Program.

- Tom Leet has been appointed as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Human Resources.
Leet has more than 25 years of higher education human resources management experience, including 10 years at
Purdue University and 15 years at UCSD.

- John Orcutt has been appointed as Associate Vice Chancellor for Government Research Relations
and director of Research Innovation Initiatives. The appointment is a new position within the office of the
Vice Chancellor for Research designed to strengthen UCSD’s efforts to secure funding for the university’s
research priorities. More >>
- Gary Ratcliff was appointed Assistant
Vice Chancellor-Student Life, effective July 1,
2006. He had served in that position for 11 months
before the appointment. He has 22 years of experience
working in student life programs on several campuses.
- Susan Shirk, a professor of political science in the Graduate School of International Relations
and Pacific Studies and a globally respected scholar of Chinese politics and foreign policy, has been named director of
the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, the UC systemwide foreign policy think tank based at UCSD.
