German Cervantes was one of them. The programmer analyst in the department of chemistry and biochemistry helped out in the Engineering Courtyard. Then he headed up to the Alumni Association’s Rocktoberfest Beer and Brat Garden. He also helped volunteers check in and roamed the campus to see where else he could lend a hand.
“He really has been invaluable,” said Jacque Fowler, a former staff association president. She was coordinating the efforts of 100 “ambassadors,” including Cervantes, who served as jacks-of-all-trades during Open House.
Cervantes said he chose to volunteer because he believes public events play an important role in shaping the campus’ image.
“The more we put on events open for the public, the more it’s likely that people will chose to come to UCSD,” he said.
Cervantes himself is an alumnus, having graduated from Third College, now Marshall College, in 1991, as a Spanish literature major with a math minor. When he’s not working or volunteering, he is coaching his 12- and 15-year-old daughters, who play soccer.
“I have time on my hands, so I want to help my other community at work,” he said. |
