What's New: Parking

What’s new this academic year? This Week@UCSD has been asking several university departments what they have in store for the fall. Here’s what Parking and Transportation Services director Brian d’Autremont and assistant director Sam Corbett told us. The department is trying to get as many people as possible out of their cars and provide other affordable and convenient ways to get to campus, Corbett and d’Autremont said. They also said they hope that 1,000 people will turn in their individual parking permits by the end of the coming academic year. Each participant in Rideshare programs saves $4,000 a year, including gas and insurance costs, d’Autremont pointed out.
“We’re hoping for a constant stream of innovation,” he said.
• 18- to 21-year-old students can use Flexcar,
a program that allows people who don’t drive
to campus to have access to a car. The vehicles are
available for short periods of time, for business
trips and personal use. Services for students are

• The Flexcar program also expanded from seven to 10 cars. Vehicles are now available at Torrey Pines Center South, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Chancellor’s residence.
• More than 1,000 parking spots along Regents Road on the East Campus will be available for $55 a month as part of a three-year pilot program. That’s about $300 in savings off a regular yearly parking permit. Shuttle service will take drivers to main campus. “It’s going to be just amazing,” d’Autremont said.
• 18- to 21-year-old students will be able to
rent cars from Enterprise, a first nationwide.
• A parking structure with 1440 spots is set to open by August 2007 on Hopkins Drive, just south of RIMAC. The new facility will have improved security, including cameras and gates.
• Bicycle training courses will be offered for
those interested in riding their bikes to campus.
“We think it’s very important to promote
bicycling, but also to teach them how to be safe on
a bicycle,” Corbett said. He rides his bicycle
every day from his home in Golden Hills to his office
at the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.
• Referrals to the university’s ride-sharing programs will be rewarded with $20 VISA gift card.
