Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of Student
Affairs to Act as Grand Marshal of Martin Luther King
Jr. Parade
UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and Vice Chancellor of
Student Affairs Joe Watson will be grand marshals of San
Diego’s 27th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade. Members of the UCSD community are
invited to march with them Saturday, January 13. The event, which will include marching bands
and floats, takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting and ending at PETCO Park.
Participants will receive a free UCSD T-shirt. Parking also is free.

| Schwarzenegger to Ask for Calit2 Operating
Funds in New Research and Innovation Initiative
in State Budget
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that he will
propose nearly $95 million in the state budget to
create the
Governor's Research and Innovation Initiative, including
$19.8 million in operating-budget support from California's
General Fund for Calit2 and three other California
Institutes for Science and Innovation. According to
a press release from the governor's office, "this
initiative provides funding for major projects that
will grow California's economic strength in key innovation
sectors, including cleantech, biotech and nanotech.

The University of California, San Diego has been named one of the top 10 “Best
Values in Public Colleges” in the February 2007 issue of Kiplinger’s
Personal Finance. The list ranks four-year public colleges and universities that
combine outstanding economic value with a first-class education.

a large amount of fat – scientifically known as triglycerides –
to your system. For one in ten of us, that could be a big problem. Although we try to reduce fat in our diet, our bodies use it for energy. But patients with elevated levels of fat in their bloodstream – nearly 10 percent of Americans – are more likely to develop arthrosclerosis, or build-up of plaque in the arteries, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Nobel Prize-Winning Neuroscientist
to Speak at UC San Diego January 10
Dr. Paul Greengard, head of the Laboratory of Molecular
and
Cellular Neuroscience at The Rockefeller University
and co-recipient of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology
or Medicine, will speak at UCSD on Wednesday, January
10th at 11:00 a.m. His lecture, "Signal transduction
pathways used by therapeutic agents and drugs of abuse,"
is sponsored by the UCSD neurosciences graduate program
and department of pharmacology. More

Reveals Secrets of Past Eruptions
A team of American and French scientists has developed a method to determine the
influence of past volcanic eruptions on climate and the chemistry of the upper
atmosphere, and significantly reduce uncertainty in models of future climate change.

Cancer Center Publishes Cookbook and Nutrition
Guide
Nutrition experts from the Moores UCSD Cancer Center
have created a cookbook that is far more than just
a compilation of
healthy recipes. The book's three co-authors, all
members of the center's Cancer Prevention and Control
Program, have expanded the cookbook concept to include
helpful, easy-to-read informational guidelines about
healthy eating and living. Food for Thought
is a guide on nutritious foods and how to easily
incorporate them into daily meals. The book is based
upon research conducted at the cancer center and other
recognized institutions. More

Bioengineering Professor Wins Engineering
Prize
The National Academy of Engineering has announced that Yuan-Cheng "Bert" Fung will receive the 2007 Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize, a $500,000 award recognizing engineering achievement that significantly improves the human condition. Fung’s research is the basis for the entire field of automotive safety design — all automobile crash tests today rely on his fundamental studies about tissue response. More

Chair of Neurosciences Named to
Alzheimer's Association National Board
Dr. Leon Thal, chair of neurosciences and director
of the Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research
Center at the UCSD School of Medicine, has been named
to the Alzheimer's Association National Board of Directors.
"The Alzheimer's Association is the premier organization
in the United States representing Alzheimer's disease
patients and their families," said Thal, who also
holds the Florence Riford Chair in Alzheimer's Disease
at UCSD. More

International Figure in Reproductive Medicine Dies
Dr. Samuel S.C. Yen, an international figure in the
field of reproductive endocrinology, professor emeritus
and former chair of the department of reproductive
medicine at the School of Medicine, passed away in
La Jolla, California on December 26. He was
79 years old.

- Go to Sign-in to My Accounts, and log in.
- Go to Income & Taxes, and click on Earnings Statement.
- Under Notes, choose
"View Statement" for the corresponding pay date.
Mileage Rate Increase
The standard mileage reimbursement rate has increased to 48.5 cents per mile.
The special rate for moves increases to 20 cents per mile. For details, see the
rates chart.

Impacts of Border Enforcement on Mexican Migration: The View from Sending Communities

This important book reveals how stricter U.S. border-control enforcement during the past
decade has affected the behavior of migrants and potential migrants in rural Mexico.
The authors establish direct links between changes in immigration-control policies and
changes in the decision to migrate, choice of destination, mode of entry and inclination
to take part in a temporary worker program.
