Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs
to Serve as Grand Marshals of Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade

UC San Diego Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Joe Watson will be grand marshals of San Diego’s 27th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade. Members of the UCSD community are invited to march with them Saturday, January 13.

The event, which will include marching bands and floats, takes place from 10 a.m.
to 1 p.m. starting and ending at PETCO Park.

Participants will receive a free UCSD T-shirt. Parking also is free. Members of the UCSD community, including students, staff, faculty and alumni, can meet at 9:30 a.m. in the parade staging area at PETCO Park’s Tailgate Park. Free transportation also will take students from campus to the parade and back. Shuttles will be available at 8:30 a.m. at the Sun God parking lot. Students can sign up at the following locations:

From PETCO Park, the parade will head north on Park Boulevard to J Street, then west to Seventh Avenue. It will then head south on Seventh and end on the west side of PETCO Park.

But the fun won’t stop when the parade ends. Members of the UCSD community also can take part in the Ninth Annual San Diego Multicultural Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade, just across from the San Diego Convention Center. The event includes multicultural food and performances, as well as free activities for children.

UCSD also is putting on its fifth annual Martin Luther King Day of Service. Participants will work with San Diego Youth and Community Services and Volunteer San Diego to help refurbish a center for at-risk youth. They will be painting and building to revitalize the space and will assemble care packages for needy youth.
