Chancellor and Vice Chancellor Joe Watson Serve as Co-Grand Marshals
Perched atop a dark blue Mustang convertible, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and Vice Chancellor Joe Watson braved near-freezing temperatures to act as grand marshals of San Diego’s 27th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade Saturday. They smiled and waved to onlookers as the parade wound its way around PETCO Park.

NASA Funds Scripps
Instrument for Probing for Life on Mars
Detector to hunt for organic
molecules during proposed 2013 mission
NASA has awarded $750,000 in funding for development of an
instrument to detect signs of life on Mars proposed
by a scientist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography
at UC San Diego. The instrument is designed to provide
the most rigorous analysis possible for the past and
present existence of biological compounds on Mars’
surface, according to Jeffrey Bada, a professor at
Scripps and lead investigator on the project team.

UCSD Launches Education
Initiative to Keep Middle School Girls
Interested in Engineering and Technology Careers
UCSD engineering faculty and students, together with San Diego Supercomputer staff,
are launching an environmental
education initiative they hope will keep middle school
girls excited about science, and eventually, careers in engineering. The UCSD team will
help San Diego county students monitor the air quality, solar radiation, and other
environmental factors surrounding their own schools, and will use the environmental
research concepts and techniques to create a multi-player online science challenge game
designed specifically for 12-15 year-old girls.

Tritons Women's Basketball Captures Seventh Straight Victory
With their seventh straight victory against Cal State
Bakersfield, UCSD's women's basketball
team improves to 10-2 overall and takes over sole possession of second place in the CCAA with
their 6-1 league mark. The loss drops the Roadrunners to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in conference action.
Chico State continues to hold its slim half game lead over UCSD in the league standings after
defeating CSU San Bernardino by 19 points on Saturday night to improve to 7-1 in CCAA play and 11-1 overall.

Dean of International Education and Director of the International Center Appointed
Lynn C. Anderson has been appointed as dean of
International Education and director of the UCSD International Center, effective January 22. Anderson will succeed Mary Dhooge, who is retiring after 33 years of service to the campus. Anderson is currently associate director of the Learning Abroad Center and director of Curriculum Integration at the University of Minnesota with primary responsibility for supporting internationalization of the campus and integrating study abroad into all majors.

Scripps Scientist Receives
International Award in Ecology and Conservation
Marine
ecologist Jeremy Jackson, a professor at Scripps Institution
of Oceanography at UC San Diego, has been selected
as co-recipient of the International Award for Research
In Ecology and Conservation Biology by the BBVA Foundation,
of Madrid, Spain. BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria)
is the second largest bank in Spain, and its foundation
specializes in promoting scientific research in the
areas of social science, biomedicine and the environment.

with the recent appointment of Diana Philippi as associate
director of development for athletics. In her
new role, the former San Diego State University assistant

Governor's Budget Supports Student Enrollment Growth, Pay Raises, Places Focus on Innovation

The 2007-08 state budget proposal issued Jan. 10 by
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger supports the University
of California’s service to California by funding
growth in student enrollments, proposing a major research
and innovation initiative, supporting faculty and
staff salary increases, and proposing an infrastructure
plan for facilities, among other things.

Club lot and replaced with red "A" permit
spaces. Also, 39 short-term visitor “V” spaces

This recording is a structured improvisation in the realms of Persian traditional music and electronic music. It was recorded live in one evening. The resulting piece is made up of three separate segments of the raw recordings carefully pasted together. Nourai performs on the violin.
