Lynn C. Anderson has been appointed as dean of International Education and director of the UCSD International Center, effective January 22. Anderson will succeed Mary Dhooge, who is retiring after 33 years of service to the campus. Anderson is currently associate director of the Learning Abroad Center and director of Curriculum Integration at the University of Minnesota with primary responsibility for supporting internationalization of the campus and integrating study abroad into all majors.
Her accomplishments include co-authoring and directing a $3 million grant-funded project to develop and implement a national model of curriculum integration of study abroad, transforming academic advising in all majors to incorporate study abroad in degree programs.
The University of Minnesota is widely recognized as a leader in the field of international student scholar services, study abroad, and campus internationalization. With over 2,100 students abroad on credit-bearing programs, it ranks 5th nationally among research institutions. Last year, Minnesota also hosted 3,384 international students in additional to 1,196 international research scholars.
Anderson has an extensive background advising, teaching, and presenting workshops for international students. She studied abroad in Germany, has a bachelor’s degree in German from Hamline University, and two masters degrees from the University of Minnesota – one in German and the other in English as a second language. She taught music in Germany for two years after college and, on multiple occasions, was the faculty advisor to groups of undergraduates conducting independent research in Germany. She is also a certified mediator and cross-cultural trainer.
