Dean of IR/PS Appointed as Associate Vice Chancellor — International Affairs

Dean Peter Cowhey has been appointed as associate vice chancellor - international affairs, effective January 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. This new position, created in response to recommendations of the International Strategy Work Group and following broad consultation with the Academic Senate and campus administrators, will provide leadership in campus-wide strategic planning and the articulation of a long-term vision and plan in support of the continuing development and enhancement of UCSD's international mission.

Concurrent with his continued leadership as dean of the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, Cowhey will serve as an advisor to the chancellor and the senior vice chancellor on international issues and strategies, will collaborate with vice chancellors, deans, faculty, and campus units, serving as a central resource and playing a coordinating role in the development of university-wide, multi-unit international initiatives and activities. He will provide leadership in the formation and ongoing activities of a campus-wide Advisory Committee on International Affairs, manage UCSD's response to inquiries and proposals for international exchange and affiliation agreements, and oversee the activities of the Office of International Academic Exchange and Protocol. In this capacity, Cowhey will also serve as a campus ambassador, spokesperson, and advocate for UCSD's international interests, representing the university at the campus, local, state, national, and international levels.
A distinguished scholar and internationally recognized expert in telecommunications and information policy and markets, Cowhey is a leader in building cooperative international arrangements for the management of security and economic issues. He has served as the Dean of IR/PS since 2002 and served as both acting director and director of the Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) from 1997-2006. During his career at UCSD, Cowhey took leave to serve in the Clinton administration as the head of international policy and regulation for the Federal Communications Commission and advisor to the U.S. Trade Representative. |
