to
Celebrate Black History Month On Campus
More than 25 programs will mark Black History Month
on campus during the month of February under the overarching
theme From Slavery to Freedom: UCSD Celebrates
the Journey and Stories of African Americans. The
annual campuswide tradition will start at noon Feb.1
in the Price Center Plaza with a "Kick-off Celebration"
sponsored by the Black Student Union and Associated

production crew members watched from afar.

The University of California, San Diego has received 45,040 freshman applications for Fall 2007,
up 1,454 students for a 3.3 percent increase from the previous year. In the UC system, the number

UCSD Softball Team Begins 2007 Campaign at Best of the West Tournament this Weekend
The UC San Diego softball team will begin its 2007 season
with six games this weekend at the Best of the West
Tournament hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. The
three-day event in Turlock will run Feb. 2 to Feb. 4. Day one starts with the Tritons taking on
Humboldt State and Grand Canyon before facing Notre Dame de Namur and CSU
Monterey Bay on day two.

Members of Music Faculty Shine in Chamber Concert
A sextet of UCSD department of music faculty members
and San Diego Symphony players received standing ovations
on Jan. 17 during a concert at the Neurosciences Institute
in La Jolla. The group included UCSD cellist Charles
Curtis and UCSD violist Che-Yen Brian Chen, who is
also the principal viola player with the symphony.
The concert also featured San Diego Symphony concertmaster
Jeff Thayer. The next concert in the
series is at 8 p.m. April 2 at the Neurosciences Institute.

Physics Professor Geoffrey R. Burbidge has won the National Academy of Sciences' Award for Scientific Reviewing. The $10,000 prize is awarded annually for excellence in scientific reviewing within the past 10 years. Burbidge was cited "for contributions as editor of The Annual Review of Astronomy from 1974 to 2004." More
